They must have a miserable life and sure if they had a choice would rather be happy with others socialising not treated like a plaything inbreeding
We are a rescue friendly bunch on here and the majority of piggies we own have come from foster homes - they didn't ask to be neglected or abused did they, same as these poor piggies are forced into a lifestyle they wouldn't really want but know no different :(

I wonder how you know that they are unhappy? Perhaps you've been a guinea in a former live? But no, wait you wouldn't remember that if you truely been reborn. Actually guineas have enough by knowing there are other guineas around, they don't need somebody to steal their food.

Also I again wonder how you know that these guineas are kept poorly? The breeders I've visited, and yes I've visited plenty because a good breeder has nothing to hide. Guineas that are kept solo in cages fit for 3 pigs, guineas that have clearly bonded with their owner. That are happy and squeeky when they see them.

All qualified breeders spend more money on quality food, quality hay, quality litter then you'd probably are able to spend on a vet each month.

If I was allowed to be reborn after this life, I'd love to be a breeders pig. Why? Becaus I know I'd be short of nothing, and get everything I needed in this life. That's more then I can say for pigs kept by so-called hobbyist who often feed them food that lacks vitamine C or keep them on sawdust that irritates their longs.

Well, there's an oxymoron if ever I've heard one!
Excuse me?
What do you know of the lines of your pet from the petstore? Nothing. YOu dont know who mom is, you dont'know who dad is, you know nothing. When something happens you dont'know if it's incidental or of it's genetic. Do you?

I'm sorry, this is my forum. I'm not a member anywhere else.

who buys from a petstore?

I'm sorry I thought I saw it mentioned somewhere. But did you know that 90% of all pets dumped in a shelter are originally bought from a petstore by somebody? There's been a research a few years back around here.

I don't care who my piggie's mums or dads are. I don't care if I have to pay hundreds of pounds in vets bills because my piggy doesn't have "perfect" blood lines, because they are my piggies and I love them. All I care is that they are happy and healthy.

It is a sad fact that many pet shop pigs and neglected pigs end up in rescue :( I have a pet shop pig who I wouldn't change for the world and three rescues :)

To be honest I think this topic has been blown completely out of proportion. All the OP was pointing out was a photo of a very longhaired piggie... rolleyes

My pigs haven't come from pet stores, they have come from rescues - at least one of which was an ex breeding sow!

The fact that illnesses may arise that may be incidental or genetic is irrelevant - they will be treated regardless to cause, and genetic problems are irrelevant because I have no intention of ever breeding!

So what if my animals have problems related to their breeding? They are my pets and they will be loved and cared for no matter what. One of which has recently given me a vet bill of £2000 with weeks of hand feeding through the night - how many breeders would go to that extent to treat their "stock"?

I'm bored of this now - go find a pro-breeding forum!

Yes, but where did they come from before they ended up in the rescue? They didn't magically appear there you know. They were probably bought from *shock-shudder* a petstore.

You ever thought about that, where rescue pigs come from before they are rescue pigs?

Yes, we think about it and shudder and feel sorry for the poor pigs before we came along and took them out of places such as "cats takeaways", backyard breeders, and owners who simply didn't care.
Or people who show guinea pigs who deemed ours not "perfect" enough and threw them into the "rejected" pile.

Wow I get all kinds of photo's, I must be loved. 8)

But without kiddin': I am not against pigs from shelters, far from I got a few of my own, but I know pigs don't come from thin air. I know they are born, and before that they must have met a partner. Somewhere, somehow. And yes loads of pigs end up in shelters, is that the original owners fault? maybe, but if the adoptee before you was responsible, the pig never would have been in the shelter.

Oh who am I talking to anyways? It's like a thick wall of rinse-repeat. 8...

Your pigs have longs? Maybe my six rescue pigs have lungs because of their weak lineage!

Well I'm so sorry, maybe you haven't noticed but like English isn't my native language and some words look alike so maybe I used the spelling of my country. :p

Honestly I don't think misspelling a word is the end of the world. Do you?

This thread is getting nasty, regardless of people's views, personal attacks are unpleasant - I vote for it to be locked now please.

It's a shame that such an interesting topic has to turn in to a barrage of insults - everyone is entitled to their own opinion - i just find it odd that 'genuine' and 'good' breeders would want to create an account on a rescue friendly forum with the sole intention to start heated debates and carry out personal attacks on people.

You say people on this forum are not open to breeding and the discussions that come with it - but by reading posts of late it seems it's the breeders and show fanciers that have a huge problem with rescues....

maybe people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones - i don't see the rescue friendly forum members joining breeding forums to antagonise and 'make-fun' of it's members.....

Clearly you are all completely ignorant of how valueable a guinea pig is to a breeder, expecially a showable one.

They put in hours each day to keep the pet in show condition, can you say the same of each of your pets? Expecially longhairs, they are washed atleast once a week, dried carefully because of the risks of colds, then groomed again carefully. The long hair isn't something harmfull, it's not something that came natural to pigs, a 'mistake' of nature because it keeps growing. Breeders will cut off the hair of a pig once they are done showing, and the pig will be put in breeding. Showpigs in 99% of the cases will never move to another home even after their show and breed carreer, because of the time it takes to prepare them and the bond that creates. Something you all knew if you read into the subject, if you ever been to a show and if you ever talked to a qualified breeder. mallethead

I quote:

Now girls and boys, don't judge something you clearly know absolutely nothing about!

Note from Admin:

The discussion of breeding and showing isn't allowed on this forum (please see forum rules). I do not wish to get into any debate about the rights and wrongs of this. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but we choose not to discuss it on here. If you wish to talk about this, I am sure there are plenty of other forums about who would welcome your input.
