Making Hay...

Can you source an equine centre or farmer within your reach that sells timothy hay for horses? If you buy by the bale, it is often a lot cheaper.

Thank you! I have found some on Gumtree and hopefully I will find one that is close by :)

For good quality hay, you need acres of meadow land, the machinery to cut it, dry it and then somewhere to store it. It is a science to get it right, if it is not dried and stored correctly, it will go mouldy and in cases where damp hay is bailed too tightly, it can combust.

I have looked on gumtree and found loads of horse hay but they seem to be quiet thick. Are they going to get hay poke if I buy a bale with thick hay?

If you do buy it bailed, make sure you smell it before you buy it. It should smell sweet, if it smells damp, then don't buy it. Ask them to split a bail for you, then you can make sure the centre of the bail is dry and sweet smelling too. They might let you just buy half a bail, which is easier to store. Stick it in a bin bag.

I buy my hay as Burguss pre packed in the UK, along with readigrass. The hay last me a week, the readigrass a month or so. But I only have 2 young piggies. I used to buy bails when I had the girls, butI had horses then too.
