I have just noticed a lump on Malcolm's chest... sort of underneath his chin and down a bit, a bit below his front paws. It's quite hard and about the size of a pea. It has made me v worried :( He has no symptoms or anything.

Could it be an abcess or are they usually bigger? I haven't had to take my boys to the vet before but I know of one who seems good so I might call them tomorrow morning.

:(

I agree with Karen, best get it checked. It could be an abcess ,they do start small.,could also be a harmless cyst or even a "fatty lump".There is the possibility of a tumour, which is why it would be safer to have it looked at.

How quickly did the lump take to come up, was it over night or has it been growing for weeks?

It's always best to get these things checked out ASAP.
Hope Little malcolm is ok. Keep us all informed.

Yes definately check it out, let us know how you get on at the vets :)

I would definately take him to the vets to get it checked out.

My "Honey" had a lump on the inside of her back leg, the vet said that it was unusual for a young guinea pig to have a tumor so she said to keep an eye on it and take her back in 2 weeks. In the meantime I bathed the lump once a day in some stuff that the vet gave me, just to keep it clean. In a few days the lump came to a head - like a spot - and then dispersed. I took her back tot he vet to double check it and she gave her a clean bill of health! I still obviously keep an eye on the area just in case.

Hopefully Malcolms lump will be nothing, but its best to get it checked over!

Good luck.

Good luck and best of luck that it's one of those pea ones that comes up and just stays there :-\

For Malcolm :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Thank you for all your nice messages. i'm just checking this morning to see which vet to take him to (my boys haven't been to the vets yet...) and will book him in asap. I'll let you know what they say. In the meantime he's got an extra big breakfast as a treat :)

Hi Sarah,

Hope Macolm is ok. My piggy has a lump at the moment too - I took her to the vets and it turned out to be an abcess. I am sure things will be ok.

That's so sweet love :smitten: :smitten:
I hope you find a lovely vet, mine is great and the girls are wonderful (fit me in when ever etc... the list goes on O0) so finding one that you're happy with will be a bonus :)
Paws crossed O0 O0

I decided to speak to Vedra at CCT to see if she could recommend a vet near to me. She thinks Malcolm's lump is a fatty lypoma (or something like that) and has advised me to go to her rather than a vet. She told me a vet will probably want to do a biopsy and a general anesthetic, which will be very expensive :( She also said she could probably do it with a local anesthetic there while I wait.

I arranged an appointment with her for 1st week of October when she's back from holiday but thinking about it, it's over 2 hours away from me and on a weekday which is a bit inconvenient with work etc.... do you think I should try a local vet first this week? I did actually get an appointment with one before I spoke to her. I could always go and then say no if they want to do a biopsy etc.?

I personally would take Malcolm to the vets as soon as possible rather than wait until October, just in case it is something nasty, which hopefully it isn't.

Good luck! :)

I would tend to agree with Cam, it's best to get it looked at straight away!

Re: Malcolms lump :( - back from the vet

I have just come back from the vet. Malcolm was a very good boy while she looked at his lump. He had a very dirty mouth from eating corn-on-the-cob this morning :)

She doesn't think it's a cyst and said it's quote hard and can't tell what it is without operating on him :( She says I can either leave it or take it off. If I leave it then it may get bigger and annoy him (it's on his chest, in line with his front paws). If she takes it off then it has to be a general anaesthetic. She quoted me £50 and said it'd be better to get it off while he's still young (he's 1)

Not sure what to do now. Vedra at CCT said she could probably get it off with a local anaesthetic while I wait. Does anyone know how much she charges there? I'd rather he could be treated with a local but it depends because cambridge is 2 hours away from me so I have to think of the drive there too.

Poor little malcolm :(

As the lump is not bothering Malcolm,I would be inclined to wait.It could well just be a fatty lump which is harmless and may not grow anyway. If the lump does grow or start to cause problems, think about surgery then.

I have had pigs over 5 yrs come through surgery ,and Malcolm is only 1 year.,so there is no need to rush into anything.

2 hours journey is a lot,and it is better to have the op done by a qualified surgeon who knows what they are doing., you need to find one who is piggy proficient though. I would start sussing vets out now, just in case you do need to get Malcolm in.

Hope he is OK, Poor little Malcolm he is young so he will more than likely be OK having the anesthetic but take your time!
