Do male guinea pigs stay fertile forever or do they become infertile with age? The male in question is over five and living with a female the same age. They've been together for a year and a half without producing any young. He doesn't exhibit any mounting behaviour, just the occasional bout of purring. I'm getting two young females soon but don't want to introduce them to the male if there's a pregnancy risk. Can anyone advise?

It could be that the female is infertile. Males remain fertile. He could be infertile. Not sure if there is a way of knowing. :)

I agree with the above, there is no way of knowing.

Personally I wouldn't take the risk of introducing any other sows unless the boar is neutered.

Thank you. I won't risk it. The boar is too old to neuter, I think, so I'll keep him with his partner and keep the new sows separate.... Am I right in thinking 5 is too old to neuter though?

Yep 2 or 3 at the very latest. 5 is a bit old, he is about 70 in pig years...awww! :)

Ah, poor boy, no ops for him then...

Presumably he's okay to stay with his partner since they haven't bred in 18 months? No new piggies will be going near him though!
