Hi Jenny

I've visited/examined and talked with LP at great length about changes in husbandry/diet/anything immediately prior to this recent wound Little pig has developed.

It's clean/uninfected and seems in no way connected with his previous sore willy/blood in urine problem.

We have identified two possible causes..but have no scientific proof as yet.. and therefore think our speculative thoughts are best kept to ourselves til we are certain and can prove something IYKWIM ;)

x

PS I'm really pleased Womble has been rehomed from you. Rachel is clearly the best of piggie slaves......and Womble is a seriously pignappable piggie....x)x)

Thanks Jenny and Pebble

I'm pleased Pebble has pointed out that Pig's current problems are not related to his previous health issues (blood in urine and sore penis) - this wound is something new and unconnected. Sorry if I have confused everyone by posting 2 different health problems after each other in the same thread.

Pig has a lovely scab over part of the wound this evening, but another part of it is looking very sore. We're off to see Anne the vet tomorrow morning for a second opinion.

Ouch, ouch, ouch. Poor lad. Sending healing vibes and kisses for Little Pig. (And a special kiss for Womble, although he might turn it down, as last time I saw him, I gave him a haircut). xx

Ooh - he is in desperate need of a haircut now! He was supposed to go to the hairdressers last weekend, but I've been so involved with Pig that I cancelled it. The haircut you gave him was lovely, if I do it myself I'm fairly certain it won't look good! I'll have to remember to post a picture of my attempt to show you - when I'm brave enough to try that is!

Have a go! You can always take off a little bit to start. It's always a bit hit and miss as to whether it looks ok when I do it. Top tip is to sit the pig sideways on your lap and let them snuggle into the crook of your elbow (and hide their eyes so they can't see what your up to)- use that forearm to lay along their body to keep them still and hold the hair between your fingers- then hold the scissors in the other hand. As long as you have your fingers between the hair you're cutting and the piggy's skin, you won't hurt them. Finish it off with a nice tidbit of parsley and he'll have forgotten about it in minutes.
My Joe usually runs off popcorning. I'm never sure whether he's displaying righteous indignation or enjoying the liberating feeling of fresh air around his nethers. :(|)

Pig update: Firstly I think Anne is an amazing vet and have felt very reassured by her tactics today. She tested Pig's urine, and he does have blood in it. This was not a contaminated sample, as the wound had a scab on it. So, he had an x-ray, but there are no signs of stones or sludge. We are upping his Septrin dosage to see if that helps.

She took a biopsy of his wound and we should get the results some time next week. In the meantime, she made Pig a collar to stop him from nibbling. I was very tearful when I left him at the vets this morning and couldn't stop giggling when I went to pick him up:

Hopefully this will help, so fingers and paws crossed everyone!

Sending big hugs to "The Slave"...(oops..and rather a lot of pignapping thoughts")) ..and pleased to hear you (LP human slave )...are feeling more comortable yourself about your beautiful little man

xx

I heard about Little Pig yesterday, I went to see Ann (Whiskey and Noodles spent the day at the vets, but that's a story for another thread) and Rachel the vet nurse was telling me off for making them ridiculously busy by recommending them on here all the time, haha!

Big big hugs to Little Pig, next time you are over this way you must pop by for a cup of tea x

Are you in Ewell then? If so, I probably walked past your house yesterday... I got a little lost on the way from the station. If you saw a confused and slightly grumpy looking woman stomping around with a map it was probably me!

No I live down in Redhill, its about 30 mins away, so you would **** need to be driving to come see me and the gang.

Life would be easier if we did live in Ewell, lol!

Thanks Jenny - it does seem to be working. The wound has a lovely scab over it and he doesn't appear to be able to get to it, so no more bleeding! He doesn't like the collar, as it is hard for him to get comfortable (he likes to lie on his side with his head on the floor and can't now), but he is tolerating it well. He only seems to get frustrated when he tries to clean his face with his paws and can't reach, and I am finding syringing difficult. I'm pleased though and am feeling very optimistic that he is going to heal now - I've managed to relax about him a little. I slept the whole night last night without getting up to check on him - the first time in nearly 2 weeks!

Right, Pig update:

By Sunday his wound had healed (yay), so I took his collar off on Sunday evening. I had one very happy (and bald around his neck) piggy. He nibbled the area a little over night on Sunday and opened up a very tiny area at the base of his penis, but it healed quickly and he seems to have left the area alone since.

We went back to see Anne the vet this afternoon and she has signed him off his medication (yay again) and we are just going to see how he gets on.

The pessimist in me thinks this won't be the last update regarding Pig's gibblety bits, but for tonight I am happy and am just going to take each day as it comes with him.

wow" Well done! This is all sounding really good and positive...... the wound has had a chance to heal which suggests it's probably nothing more sinister than " nibbly gibblety piggie syndrome" :{

Hugs

Forgot to add this yesterday and wanted to let people know in case any other pigs get "mystery wounds" as this may help with future diagnosis.

The biopsy results from Pig's wound showed that an underlying bacterial infection was probably the cause of the problem i.e. Pig nibbled the area because he knew there was something wrong with it.

Addition: The area looked lovely this morning - no fresh wounds, just lovely clean skin. Pig was also very happy not to have any medication this morning, the first time in 3 weeks!

Ready for the next installment? Pig's wound came back again 2 weeks after I took the collar off and took about 3 weeks to heal. It didn't get as bad as it did last time, I think because we were quicker at putting the collar on him:

He had another ultrasound (I discovered that the first one, at a different vets, had not been done properly) which didn't reveal anything, and after many discussions with my vet, we decided to neuter him. This was a very difficult decision and one that is far from guaranteed to work. My vet was suspicious that hormonal problems were causing Pig to self-mutilate and we both thought it was worth the risk to try.

He had the operation yesterday and has been home with me since last night. The operation went well and while he is being a bit difficult about eating and isn't going to the toilet as often as I would like him to be, I think he is doing okay. I was up throughout the night syringe feeding him, and he seems to be eating/pooing much better this morning, but some of his poos have been very strange.

We'll be back at the vets tomorrow for his first post-op check up and in the meantime I am obsessively checking on him every 15 minutes or so!

I just took a picture of Pig in his hospital cage and thought I'd share it. He is eating well tonight and his poos now seem more normal:

I am pretty upset that so few people seem interested in what is going on with Pig at the moment. Most of you who have had sick pigs in the past are aware that support and encouragement really helps - thinking most people on the forum aren't interested, doesn't.

For those of you who have been in touch thank you so much - I've had a rotten week and knowing you are there has meant a lot.

In the past, some members have been a big help to me with Pig and I am grateful for that, but I have checked one too many times now to see if anyone has posted advice on Pig's thread and am feeling like a needy girlfriend. For my own sanity I'm not going to log on here for a while.

I have just been scanning the posts and seen you and thought oh no! poor little pig again - am so sorry that he is unwell again - hope the nuetering (I can never spell )sorts it out - you must be so worried / stressed upset - take care - hugs to you both

I'm obviously interested....but "this last week" has been my busiest ( for12months) so not been easily accessible.

Still here rootling for you and Pig........ring me please?

,...more hugs and piggie kisses.

I think when people don't have any advice they say nothing rather than a nice supportive comment and it's really not nice your pig is at the peak of his problems so it's getting on top of you. Been there got the T-shirt! You, know me and Patrick are rooting for you and pig.

I hope pig is back to his cheeky self soon and no more naughty business with that collar Mr!

If you look at the number of views this thread has you will see that an awful lot of people are keeping a close eye on Little Pig's progress. There are only so many ways of saying 'poor Little Pig I hope he's ok' so do not think for one moment that he is not in our thoughts (I get my regular updates from your 'phone a friend').

So sorry. I have been reading yours posts and feel awful now that I didn't post before. I missed most of Pig's thread the first time round but Pebble mentioned it to me so wasn't sure whether to reply as I hadn't been there at the beginning.

You're doing wonderfully well though. Pig is so lucky to have you. Pig is beautiful and I'm keeping everything crossed that the latest operation sorts out his problem.

Please do keep us updated. Just because people don't reply doesn't mean they're not reading about Pig and thinking of him.

Lots of love and hugs xxxxxxxxxx
