Hi everyone I got my male skinny pig neutered almost a year ago an as if 5 months ago he got an infection which made him look like he had testicals still! I brought him to my vet the drained it an heave me antibiotics then few months later here we are again I brought him they gave him a incesion an gave me antibiotic twice a day for 2 weeks went away for a week now it’s big again. Any ideas what’s going on I keep fleece bedding an a very clean cage

I’m sorry to hear that.

Abscesses need to heal from the inside out and they also need a good antibiotic (azithromycin being the best one). Any speck of pus left inside can restart the abscess.
Abscesses can need to be stitched open leaving you access to the hole to enable you to flush it out every day (a couple of times a day even) using a syringe filled with saline until it heals.
The other method is to surgically remove the abscess capsule.

Just draining it and then leaving the hole to seal up (which happens very quickly) can trap pus inside and if the antibiotic isn’t a strong enough one, then the issue can restart

Thank you cause that’s exactly what’s happening this will be the third time I’m going and we did open it and I did syringe clean it a few times and he was on the antibiotics two times a day for two weeks and now it’s back and it’s only been three weeks he was just off the medicine this last week and it came right back I’ll have to call my vet and see what’s next thank you so much for all the good information

The issue is if the hole isn’t stitched open it will scab over within a day or two so that isn’t enough flushing time and then that isn’t enough flushing time. Stitching it open means it can’t seal up as easily

Hopefully the vet can help

Thank you so you their def gunna have to stitch it up because this will be the third time I go for same problem hope he’s not in pain
