I had two Male Guinea Pigs, they were brothers and were both only two years old. Two days ago, one of them passed away, so I took his brother to the vet and got him checked out to make sure he isn't sick. Turns out he has an upper respiratory infection. He is currently on antibiotics and is on his way to recovery! Once he is healed up, I will get him another companion. My question is if it would be safe to get another male? Way before I got the piggies two years ago, I did research and learned that males actually do good together, but when I asked my vet, she said that it would be better to get a female and get my male fixed. She said that the only reason the male piggies got along was because they grew up together and were brothers. However, everything I've been reading online says I can recompanion him with another male. I wanted to get advice from other piggie owners. I would appreciate the feedback! Thanks!

The vet is wrong about them only getting on because they were brothers, it's a myth. I've had to brothers hate each other and had to live apart. When you get another guinea pig to keep you're one company, you will need to bond them before you just plop another in the same cage.

You will be best off contacting a decent guinea pig rescue, and taking you're boy to find another boy he gets on with, we call it guinea pig dating.

You could get him fixed and then find him a sow, the chances are pretty good of them getting along. But it's not easy to find a single sow in rescue.

Whatever you do though, make sure you're boar with the uri gets the all clear before getting another pig 👍

The vet is definitely wrong. Two unrelated males can live happily together - my two boys do. being brothers does not guarantee character compatibility.
It’s about getting character compatible piggies and the best way is to take your boy boar dating at a rescue. They will ensure that he is paired with a compatible pig for a successful bond when he is well again

Welcome to the forum and so sorry for the loss of your boy.
We have a Rainbow Bridge thread where you can post a tribute to your boy if you would like to.
Hope your piggy recovers soon and is ready for a new companion.
I can’t add to the advice given.
Do keep us posted
