I am really excited to announce i shall be hopefully getting a pair of piggies on saturday. I have been doing my research as to what guinea pigs require and i honestly can't wait to get our new additions to the family! :<> However i've read alot about how its more common for boars to fight but on the otherhand i have read that boars are are alot more outgoing, really struggling to decide between males and females. I'm just wondering what opinions people have on this? Any help would be much appreciated :)

I personally have always found boars more loving and full of character. I have a spft spot for boys and their daft antics. The girls always seem to be a little more independant and like to do their own things Ive found

if you go to a rescue then you will get a healthy pair of piggies that get along, good luck only taking 2 home though :)

boys can fight, but so can girls.

personally i prefer girls.

If your thinking maybe later on you'll want more piggies then best to get girls as you can add to them later.

From my experience with one male in with three females (he was done), he was by far the most cuddly and friendly piggie out the three, the girls were and are quite *****y with each other infact two have a hate hate relationship - nothing serious as they respect each other and never come to blows but they constantly bicker with each other. The males like to be male, they parade around being all that and if there isnt enough space for the other to get out the way or the pairing isnt quite right for them both, then that would be why they would fight.

There are plenty of people on here that have boars in pairs quite happily and there is no reason to think that they would fall out. The best thing to do is to get a rescue pair that have been bonded with each other and that takes that concern off your hands, you only then need to enjoy them both.

I love my girls, the advantage is you can add to the numbers a little easier (but again the personalitlies have to be right) if you have the space to, but I miss my boy :( and there are lots of boys looking for homes due to the misconception that they have to live alone which they dont and as I said they can live perfectly happliy together as females do with each other.

Basically the choice is yours, both have plusses and minuses but if you want cuddly, I would opt for males

I noticed the other day when venturing into P@H to get some hay, I noticed a sign about guineas, and it said that boars are more friendly than sows? I've never had a pair of boards but I've had a pair sows for 6 years and I wouldn't change them, they will curl up and snuggle with me or lick me to death and they never really fight, but the age difference and sometimes when they are in season, it makes them a little bit moody towards eachother, but they have never had major fights or issues with eachother.
I think all piggies have their own personalities. Recently when having Mr Teapot joining my girls, i've noticed that he is a real giddy kipper, he will chase my girls around and popcorn all over uncontrollably afterwards or when he hears me rustling the hay bag. And hes a very cuddly pig, and i think that is boar nature to be cuddly. He will just lay his head down and want to be laid and snuggled with me :)

Yeah i would prefer a more cuddly/sociable piggy as i wouldn't be able to resist picking them up for a snuggle. We are going to a rescue centre for them i'm in the mansfield area(east midlands) and we are going to the avalon rescue centre. However i would like to add more piggies at a later date, so really stuck. I think we will go for boars and i can always get another cage if i do want to add more piggies i suppose. I just wanted to know your own personal opinions. Also just to add seeing so many pigtures over the last few days i've been on here is driving me crazy! I want my piggies already! Hehe.

I have rehomed from all three rescues that Suzy has given you links to and can recommend them most warmly.

They take great care when bonding their piggies, so it doesn't matter which gender you go for. Some boars can be very laid back indeed; more often than sows.

oh i see, i shall take a look on the websites you have linked thanks alot for your help everyone. :)

Would you be able to take in 3 piggies?

I had the same question as you and wasn't too sure what I wanted. At the moment, I am hoping to get a male and 2 females. That way you can the best of both :)

That sounds like a good idea ninz, one extra piggie won't hurt will it ;)

No :)) The more the merrier! (With sows ofcourse) Long as you have space for 3 piggies then it would be a better option for you :)

We have a c&c cage, so i could just add more grids everytime i add a new piggie ;) (i wish, the oh would kill me! haha)
