Mallow?

I've read on a few websites and books that the Mallow plant is good to feed to guineas. We planted one in their honour a few months ago, and is now good and big to pick some bits off.

Does anybody know whether its just the flowers that they eat? (as one book said) Or whether can they have the leaves as well?
 
hmm..not sure, i know they can have the flower..maybe someone else will know
 
Pamperedpiggies would know pm her I am sure she sells mallow.
 
:) If its the Mallow that you buy to grow in the garden then no. The wild variety is fine. If you'd like me to order some in for you then I can :)

Damn! Yes, it is one bought from a garden centre. Oh well, the thought was there!
 
What species is it? Common Mallow (Malva Sylvestris) is the one found in the wild and all parts of the plant can be fed. My handy little book tells me that all species of Mallow can be fed to both rabbits and guinea pigs O0 Mallow is an astringent plant so its a good idea to feed alongside diuretic plants such as dandelions.
 
I thought that Lavatera was unsafe? MaryH what does your little book say :) Seems peculiar that one species is OK and not others ::)

Whats the little book you have? Sounds like something I should invest in!

Its Rabbit Nutrition by Virginia Richardson (a vet who speacialises in small furries) it shows some good pics of safe plants to feed, although its called rabbit nutrition all of the plants listed in the book are safe for piggie too O0 There is also another more complex book called "greenfoods for rabbits andcavies" which I keep meaning to order.

Karen - no idea about the Lavatera, it says all species in my book, I tried googling it but didnt come up with much ?
 
There's lots of wild species, I wonder if its just those. It was Belinda @ GG who told me. I have that book too :)
 
its a flower, theres many diff species of it, I'm growing the musk mallow at the moment for the tortoises apparently its a hit with them too :)
