I have taken in a mum and 4 tiny babies this morning (babies are from 58g to 66g). She was dumped in a box on a cycle track and a kind lady picked them up and dropped them at the vets (Suzy it's THAT lady ringing me I checked)

At first glance mum looked okay but I have just examined her fully and she's not good at all.

She weighs 548g, she's a sheltie and is totally malnourished, you can feel all her bones.

She is COVERED in scabs - all over her body, mouth, belly is esp bad and her back too. Some of them look fungal some look like mites.

I want to give her some relief, what can I do?

Can I bath her with fungal stuff? (I have hibiscrub)

Can I give her a small dose of ivomectin?

What can I do for poor mum?

How awful, I have no advice I do hope she is back to full health in no time. I'm glad she has a chance now!

Joanne I think I need to toughen up. I just keep wanting to cry when I look at her.

ANYTHING could have happened on the cycle track! They could have been eaten and they were picked up yesterday morning - had they been there all night?

She's absolutely gorgeous too - really gorgeous looking sheltie. I just hope everyone is okay.

Oh, I'm sorry, poor, poor piggies! Cry all you want, Lisa, it's what I did with the snake piggies...

Have you asked your vet to prescribe Malaseb? I know this is what "my" rescue used for all the snake feed pigs and, in fact for all with bad skin conditions...

I'm obviously no piggy health expert, but with an infestation that bad, don't you think it's worth trying anything? I mean, whatever is eating her will be pretty bad...

Aww the poor piggies - so glad they are with you now Lisa. I've not really any advice but am sure someone will have xx

Have thought of pming clairelove or Hels? To my knowledge, they have both dealt with pregnant/nursing girls in a bad state like this and are currently not on holiday.

Nothing wrong with having a cry. Poor mum and babes. I hope you can get a course of treatment worked out quickly for this girl and that all thrive under your care. I am sure that a safe place and good food will work wonders too.

My vet said hibiscrub is okay so I have bathed her in that, left it 5 minutes and rinsed it off. She's absolutely covered in scabs it's so awful I feel physically sick. After her bath I have put super souffle cream on her scabby bits and she's back in her cage. I have washed thoroughly and changed my clothes after that.

She is SO thin. I have some photos I'll put on later but my goodness people make me so so cross!

She's a coronet not a sheltie and looks to have 2 coronet babies. They are all beautiful. She's producing good amount of milk by the looks of her - more than Tessie did at the start and the babies are very active and quite hyper.

Right I need to get back to my day for now! I still have everything to do and people coming to see Tessie and her baby girls later on.

I think my mum gets prescribed this. She's away at the mo and back tomorrow so i'll ask her. But I'm pretty sure she has malaseb.

I have no useful advice Lisa, it's one area I'm grey on, pregnant/nursing sows and little ones. I'm rarely sure what's safe and what's not.

Thinking of you and this poor piggie and her babies. xx

aaw lisa I'm so glad you got these pigs. how bleeding awful i feel angry at those people for doing that they deserve something bad to happen to them. I'm sorry but i cant believe someone could be so cruel. :(

Oh Lisa :( Some people are just plain evil.

I'm glad this little girl and her babies have found their way to you. I hope she and her little ones pull through and begin to get better and better in your good care xx

I have taken some photos maybe someone can help me with what's round her mouth?

It certainly looks sore. Daktarin oral gel? Is that okay considering her teeny ones?

Here is her tummy and trust me this makes it look good, under all of her hair are terrible terrible scabs that I can't photograph - esp on her upper chest and under her front arms and on her chin.

They are also over her back

Here is her size with my hand for scale (I have a small hand)

Oh my God, I just don't understand people. Am so glad she was handed into you, at least they all have a chance now. I can't even begin to imagine what may have happened.

Lisa she is thin but her skin doesnt look really bad, you can give her ivomec the normal dose, plus bath her in Nizoral shampoo every week for 3 wks but it doesnt look really bad as bad as ive seen it and it is sad to say you will see a lot worsexxx

I'm sure I will claire - I just wish I could get a photo of whats going on under that hair, it's so gross under there and it's nothing but scabs, her bald bits are the best looking parts of her skin love her.

So are you saying the oral drops use them behind the ear instead? 1 drop per ear?

Hi have you tried emailing sue at cavy corner? As I know she has some amazing stuff for skin things like that she will be able to tell you what it is and where to get it! All I know is that it's absolutely brilliant! Just tell me if you need the email address although I think it's on the website.

Good luck to mum, babies and you ofcourse!

Sophie

Claire - just to be sure (it's late and i'm tired :{ )

So the stuff I would normally use (Ivomec) still use it only use it on her skin? 1 drop behind each ear

Or would I need to order Xeno?

Hope that's clearer..

i use ivomec its 1 drop behind each ear ...only=put it on the bald patch of skin behind each ear .

Ive used it in preg sows, littered sows with bad mites, and baby guineas with bad mites all have been fine x

Best and most immediate relief for your little lady is possibly injections - but not Ivermectin. My vet is currently treating mine with weekly Destomax (Doramectin). It's a synthetic molecule that just hits the bugs and not the piggies cells (unlike ivermectin)...it's unlicensed for piggies and you would need to check if it can be given to nursing sows...but it's really effective

However the shampoos and Xeno treatment should suffice (unless there are ear mites which are more stubborn to shift). What is the medication you plan to use drop wise? If we know the strength/concentration/brand name then perhaps we can comment if it is Ok to swap it from oral to topical use and the dose required?

Poor wee lassie - so glad you have rescued her and her babs.....

Have you thought about keeping her on fleece if the cuts/sores are bad/underneath too? I couldn't see the photos but it does sound bad :(

I hope she's feeling more comfortable this morning, poor thing.

I have her on vetbed and in the house so I can watch her closely. She seems to be struggling eating, it's either teeth or those sores round her mouth. I think sores as yesterday after her daktarin she ate alot better. Going to persevere with it and weigh her every day. I am thinking if she doesn't gain then the vets it is, ditto if her scabs don't get better, I did speak to my vet yesterday.

It's just Ivomec the solution - I think it's 1% off the top of my head but I could be talking nonsense. Just got up.
