Hi

I have a 4 year old guinea pig (Alfie) who was adopted so I don't know his early history. Over the last 1-2 years one of his top incisors does not seem to be wearing down. I took him to the vets and they said he had broken his bottom tooth so could not grind down the top one. He has a constantly supply of timothy and meadow hay as well as fresh veg and is not on pellets as I was told this could make the problem worse.

He has had his teeth trimmed 6 times under anesthetic and just 3 weeks after his last dental treatment his top tooth is once again very long and causing him to struggle to eat. I'm taking him back to the vets this week but I'm at a loss for what to do next. As things look at the moment he'll be having dental work done under anesthetic every 3/4 weeks. Aside from the cost which is not important if I can help him, surely this amount of anesthetic can't be good for a small animal.

In every other way Alfie is absolutely fine and so far hasn't lost any weight. I just don't know where to go next :(

Thanks in advance for any help/advice. I'll try and get a pic of his teeth as well if he'll let me, but here he is anyway... 17353564_10155107969776804_849751834443942063_n.webp

Hi!

Where are you located? If you are in the UK, Cat & Rabbit Care Clinic in Northampton is the best when it comes to dental piggies. Simon Maddock trims the teeth withouth GA so piggies can eat right away without the effects or getting recovery period from anaesthetic.

Hi, not sure where or what country you are based in but @furryfriends (TEAS) runs a sanctuary for special needs piggies and often there are dental issues. She may be best placed to give you some advice. She is on the forum when she has time but if you look up teas (the excellent adventure sanctuary) then you could drop her an email or give her a call

I can highly recommend Simon Maddox at the Cat & Rabbit Clinic in Northampton. My pig Ted has had dental problems. My local vet trimmed his teeth with General Anesthetic which resulted in me having to syringe feed him for 3 weeks, he couldn't pick up his food to eat it. He also lost quite a lot of weight and was quite poorly tummy wise too for a few weeks after op due to lack of food.
Took him to Simon who filed his teeth with no Anesthetic just over a week ago, (5-10 minute procedure, he was eating straight away. It was a long journey for us all 6.5 hours and 300 miles each way but well worth it. Debbie at TEAS was very supportive and we stayed at the Campemile Hotel just off M1 at Northampton, they take pets and very reasonably priced.

Ted now eats hay, something he has been unable to do since May! And put on weight!

Hope your little piggie gets his nashers sorted out soon

Another recommendation for the Cat and Rabbit clinic if you are in the UK.

I had guinea pigs for a few years before i even knew about simon and kim . And i love 20 minutes away lol
