My four year old female guinea pig developed a lump near her nipple a few months ago. We took her to the vet who said a lot of the lump was fluid and drained it. She was left with a small solid lump. She had an infection at the site and has been treated with septrin and then baytril for the past two months. I also wash the site with hibiscrub every other day and the hole is starting to heal. She has metacam daily and is very lively and eating well.
Tonight, I have found another lump, this time not directly on her nipple but within that region. I can't put her through having that lump drained too. Has anyone experienced anything similar and could offer any advice?

I am very sorry that you are facing a 'here-we-go-again' scenario. It can really get to you.

Treatment always depends on the nature and location of the lump. As mammary lumps can be both benign or malign, they really need to be checked out by a competent vet. Your was obviously a fluid filled but benign cyst that would have at some point blown up and caused sepsis, so well done on catching it early enough - even of treatment has been a pain!

Giving the medication and washing the wound isn't a hassle - I just fit it into our daily routine and she handles it really well. My vet is suspicious that it the original lump which was under the fluid may be cancerous and isn't really willing to operate because she still has this infection and thinks it is too risky at the moment. They also warned that other lumps could appear and sadly that has proven to be the case so surgery really isn't an option now.
My heart just breaks for her because she really is the loveliest, most gentle guinea pig and she has fought so hard over these past few months. She hates going to the vets but has been so brave. Life really is cruel sometimes

I am very sorry; she has a loving and very caring mum.

Like with our beloved human family and friends, we cannot choose what illnesses they contract - all we can do is be there for them and do our best. :(
Try to concentrate on giving her as much quality in her life as you can while you deal with the lumps. Very few piggies like going to the vet, for obvious reasons, but praise her for being brave and give her a special treat on the way home. I always tell my piggies that we are going back home now... ;)
