Hi, I have three male piggies, two live together and the other one separate but next to his brothers so they can see each other and still communicate. All approx. 2 years old, sold to me as babies as "brothers". Elvis has been diagnosed as having a mammary tumour, specimen extracted from the growth and sent off to the lab, he's booked in for surgery a week Monday. I've just checked on Bobert my solo piggy and have just noticed that he too has a small lump on his mammary gland with clear fluid coming out of the teat. Isn't it a bit odd that both pigs have the same thing? Bobert also has a lump that has appeared on his back this week, again quite small, but new. Third piggy is fine, no lumps! Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts? I'm going to book Bobert into the vets tomorrow, just odd surely they can't both have mammary tumours at the same time, wondering if it could be something else!

Hi and welcome

What a worrying time for you!

Mammary tumours are actually more common in boars than in sows and they are not contagious. Unless your two boys are related (potential genetic disposition), this is a simple coincidence - rare but unfortunately not impossible. Mammary tumours can be benign and need not necessarily be malign. Occasionally, a piggy can develop mammary tumours under each nipple.
What any of them won't do is swell down again; instead they will keep on growing until a piggy is no longer able to stand on all four legs at the same time so an operative removal is the only way forward. Thankfully, most of these need not to go deep into the body when done early and piggies have a good recovery chance. :(

Some piggies are more prone to lumps than others. Most are thankfully harmless. The lump on the bum is not related to any mammary tumour.
