Hi I recently posted a thread about Spike's impaction problem. I hadn't been able to see my usual exoctic vet about 10 days ago as there had been an emergency at a local zoo. I was advised by another vet in the same practice that the impaction could be due to a change in diet. (I had changed his pellets from Pets at Home to Excel so I accepted the diagnosis). However I went back to my GP Savvy vet today as I was still concerned about Spike.Today I have been told he has a mammory tumour and the vet also discovered an unexplained internal lump. This lump does not appear to be attached to anthing and the vet admitted he had no idea what it was. He did have to feel Spike's body quite vigourously to discover the lump.

I am waiting two weeks and will take Spike back to check the size of both tumour and lump.

I was advised an xray could be done and at the same time a biopsy could be taken from the unexplained lump.

I am sat with Spike beside me and he seems very subdued. Has anyone any advice on a situation like this. Spike is 6 and half I have only had him since he was 5 and I have no idea of his treatment other than a child had had him prior to me getting him. He was underweight and his fur was very whispy. Both have improved since I have had him but he is still a lot lighter in weight than my other 3. Thanks

I am sorry that it is not the news you wanted to hear! I would recommend to have both checked. The fact that the lump is not attached to an organ means that it is operable and that Spike has a much, much better chance at living a while yet!

Many thanks for reply. I think I will contact the surgery tomorrow and bring forward Spike's appointment and just go ahead with xray and possible operation then. I have read on this forum that older boars have come through a mammary tumour op but I was concerned about the added complication of the independent lump.

My Nuggets had a large lump the size of a walnut & it was attatched to his stomach wall - he had 45 minutes of surgery and came through it fine.
