Ohhh my goodness that wound is horrific.

:o

I'm a wee shocked, hello Karen welcome to the forum!

Whats your little piggies name? Have you seen another vet? Do you have any more pictures of your piggie?

Hope you founda good vet and your little pig is on the road to recovery xxxxx

Keep thinking of the poor piggy, really would like an update?:(

My partner just pointed this post out to me while I was sitting on the floor feeding our little Willow. I have never in my life seen such a nasty wound on someones "pet" that they have let go for so long. What is this teaching your daughter? That it is ok to let your pet suffer as long as you are content that it is still alive? It will only be alive with the correct treatment.

I thought I had about seen it all being from Arkansas, but this selfishness is one of the most horrific things I have seen. I truely hope you have taken this little soul to a proper vet.

wow. i dont know what to say. I'm torn between screaming in disbelief, crying for this little baby who clearly is not receiving the help he needs, or trying to patiently encourage you to get treatment. i know that you have had a lot of negative reactions, and to be frank, i feel as though they are just. however, i know you feel like you're being attacked, and i really hope this doesnt deter you from the forum because there really are wonderful people on here who have a wealth of knowledge and support, and really want whats best for all things guinea pig. so please please please dont ignore the advice given because you're angry at the way people have been speaking to you. and pleeeease let us know how (and if) you saw another vet, and what they had to say. dont let this wait a day longer. he has suffered enough. and to think that he isn't in pain is ludicris, because the wound takes up a large section of his body. pleeeeease take pebble's advice and see a vet who knows what they are talking about.

i have been back to vets the wound IS NOT infected and we are going to continue with the antibacterial powder that keeps it dry. he doesnt get any trouble with flys while he is in the cage or grazing.
i am not ignoring or mis treating the animal as i have him checked to make sure there is no infection in there.

What else has the vet suggested? From my own experience, some vets are downright rubbish. Actually, even within the same practice you can get rubbish and brilliant vets.

Thank you for coming back and providing an update Karen. Given the reaction you had previously, I'm not sure many people in your shoes would have returned to the forum so thank you. I'm so pleased that your vet is still intent on supporting your little piggie and is happy with their progress, as I know when you were last on the forum you and the family were discussing what to do as the vet was not so confident.

It's great news the wound continues to remain un-infected and a testament to your hard work in keeping the wound clean.

If at any time you feel you can take your piggie to Lance for a second opinion, it might help in terms of your piggie's prognosis and understanding what is going on.

If you ever have cause for concern about your piggie's health, please don;t hesitate to Pm one of us if you would prefer to discuss privately rather than post.

I did say in my assessment of the original photo that the wound was clean and healthy, I never suggested it was infected and I am glad that it remains so.

Do you have a plan from the vets on how to help heal up the wound? From that photo there is no evidence of the wound repairing itself yet, I ask again do you have a new photo - you can send it via pm if you dont want to post it openly. I know I am not a vet but I have had a LOT of experience in helping wounds far worse than this one and I feel that you would benefit from my experienced eye.

And on the subject of flies, advice on how to try to minamise the risk of fly strike on open wounds

*keep the wound clean and dry - it is vital that this wound is unattractive to flys to lay eggs, they like warm and damp so if you have cleaned up the wound then applied the powder, make sure that you have dried the wound before applying the powder and that the areas surrounding the wound are completely dry as well

*use fly papers and sprays as a preventative in the housing, especially if outside, I would be inclined to find some fine mesh to put up as a fly screen on any open areas of the cage, even a mozzie net which will allow the air to get through but not flys, and if you use a run, I would cover this also with a fly screen.

*check the smell of the wound daily, it should smell warm, anything other than this smell can be an indication of a change in the wounds healing process.

I have just read this thread for the first time, hadn't noticed it before. i don't often post, but do enjoy reading the forum for advice, interest and to gain from the experience of others.

I have to say though that this thread has shocked me. Yes the wound looks serious, yes the wound obviously needs vet attention. But I'm sorry, I feel the way this lady has been treated is equally shocking to me. I understand that there is no way to know whether what someone is posting is true or not, but who are we to judge other than what we have been told? We have been told that she has visited the vet, followed treatment, seen no improvement, returned, followed treatment. She has been advise that her guinea pig is not suffering and has been acting on that advice. She has been to a pet shop and asked for further advice. Whilst I also appreciate that the pet shop staff may not be qualified to diagnose or advise on a medical condition, neither are the majority of members to this forum, so really, what is the difference other than that the pet shop should have told her to see a vet. That's not her fault. She also stated very early that now she realised that the advice she had been given is wrong she will be taking the guinea to another vet, one which was recommended. However post after post has just repeated the same advice in a negative and often incredibly rude and insulting way. I understand being passionate about animal welfare, but what about people? Surely someone asking for help and advice is better than someone leaving it and not trying anything else? Maybe best to give people the benefit of the doubt before judging too harshly?

I do appreciate that every post has been of the best of intentions and with the health of the piggy in mind but I can't help but wonder what new members to this forum would think, it would be such a shame if people were scared to ask for advice incase they had a response like this.

I don't want to upset anyone and I hope I'm not speaking out of turn, but I felt the need to say something. There have been lots of really friendly posts and helpful ones too. Apologies for rambling.

I am really not trying to attack you but which vet have you gone to? Something subtle in "been back to the vet" is leading me to worry that you went back to the one who told you not to worry. Please please PLEASE take Pebbles up on her earlier offer (if it still stands) if this is the case. Your piggie possibly really needs a surgery...

It's great that you have ensured that there is no infection but now you need to take a proactive approach towards treatment and a cavy savvy vet is your best answer right now, I think that Pebble's offer was incredibly kind and generous, please consider it (again, if it still stands).

Potentially you have grown accustomed to the sight of the injury and so are not feeling the urgency others are...

Also this is the friendliest and most helpful forum I have ever come across, so to get so many negative responses means that you really should be listening to and hastening to do what people are urging you to do...

Good luck with your piggie! (What is his name?)

xx

I've just seen this and I really hope the little piggy is doing ok.

I worry, if William has a little fleck of dirt on his paws :))

But in all seriousness I hope this piggy has received proper treatment and is on the road to recovery.
