Hi, So I'm worried that my 5 year old guinea pig Chubbs may have mange mites but I'm not sure. for some background on this Chubbs has lots of tumors so she takes pain meds every night and she also has fur loss due to hormones ( shes not spayed ) and has lots of dandruff. ( not sure if that means anything ) Anyhow, for the last week or so when you touch her back she quickly turns around and trys to bite and scratch the spot. i didn't think much of this at first since she normally is a sassy girl but today i saw a cut on her back near the spot she trys to scratch and its pretty deep and nasty and the spot around it is crusty. I lightly touched it and she tried to bite me and started grooming the spot like it hurt. other then that she doesn't seem to be acting different other then the fact that she is very itchy. Shes still eating and drinking normally. From what i had read online it seems like this could possibly be mange mites but I'm really not sure as ive never had this problem before. I'm trying to set up a vet appointment for her this week. ( I will try to add a picture of the cut )20190123_164047.webp

Hi! It is impossible for us to tell whether it is mange mites or ringworm/fungal. Please see a vet for a hands-on diagnosis.
I am very sorry. Both issues are opportunistic and can hit when the immune system is lowered. they are more common in new stressed out pet shop babies, but older/frail or pregnant piggies are the other at increased risk groups.
You can find more information about either issue in this guide here: What to check and look out for in new guinea pigs (vet checks, sexing, parasites&illness)
