Hello, one of my piggies got mange a while ago and we took him to the vets to be treated. We finished the full course of bathing and medicine and I waited a while for him to improve and his hair to thicken again, but it hasn't. It's gotten worse! Any ideas why this may be? I have temporarily changed their hay suppliers, could the hay be bad?
This is really getting me down as it feels endless. He is as bright and bubbly as always but is scratching which I know must make him feel rubbish and must hurt a lot. Any ideas please?
Thank you x

Awww it is a nightmare to shift mange!
It could possibly be a skin fungal infection, apparently these go hand in hand. Is there any dry skin in the fur? Can fur come out with little effort?

Hi and welcome

How piggy savvy is your vet and what kind of treatment have you been prescribed? It is impossible for us to comment unless we know more exactly what you have been treating with.

Ivermectin or selamectin drops on the skin are the usual treatment for mange mites (trixacarus caviae); no bathing required (in fact, it can trigger fitting in advanced cases!). Mange mite eggs are generally present in the skin in many guinea pigs and are kept under control by a fully operational immune system. They tend to break out of a piggy is either stressed or ill, or its immune system is still under construction.
Guinea Lynx :: Mange Mites

Mange mites are not visible and burrow their eggs in the skin. If you can see tiny egg cases fixed to the hairs (it looks like somebody has emptied a pepper mill over the piggy), then you are dealing with less harmful hay or fur mites (chirodiscoides). They come with imported US brands hay; we have noticed an increase in cases. Unfortunately the new strain of hay mites can be very difficult to get rid of. Sometimes a mix of ivermectin and lice baths can do the trick, but you need to wait at least 48 hours after each application before you can treat with anything again to allow the active ingredients to be fully absorbed andfo their work.

Has your vet checked for a fungal infection, which can look very similar in the early stages but requires different treatment? Ringworm is just the most aggressive and transmissive form, but there are others that can affect the whole body eventually.

We may be able to help you better if you please added your country, state/province or UK county to your details as brand names and vet access can vary enormously. We have got members from all over the world. click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location.

Hi, I live in the UK and my vet is very good with guinea pigs. They gave me 3 doses of ivermectin to give 10 days appart and I had to bath him 3days after every dose with parasite shampoo. My piggie has a "V" shape on his back from where he has been scratching (I'm told this is a sign of mange) and his skin is quite dry and flaky.
The new hay I got is a bale from a local farm, I normally get my hay from another one of the local farms but couldn't for a while.

Hi it sounds like mange mites then. You can buy ivermectin online as Xeno 450 - what your vet would probably prescribe anyway

My guinea pigs had to have ivermectin injections at the vets to get rid of it, it’s once a week for 3-4 weeks. That’s the only thing that worked for my pigs x

Poor piggies, that mustn't have been pleasant for them. Was it expensive?

I think it was around £30 per set of injections for both guinea pigs which I didn’t think was bad as i had been to 3 different vets before and spent loads of money just to be told there’s nothing wrong with the piggies when I knew there was x

I don't know about you guys but our piggy consultation price is £30+ so you're looking at 60 odd quid straight away!

If the Xeno isn't working then a trip to the vets is needed

I have brought some xeno and I shall wait a tad to see any improvements. I'm very lucky in the fact that I have a guinea pig rescue and clinic about 40 mins away and they don't charge much at all. Last time I took my piggies there for a health check it cost about £20 for all 4 of them which is fab. If it doesn't improve then I will take them there straight away.
Thankyou for your help ☺️

Mine was around £15 for the first consultation for both piggies and then £30 for the injections but after the first time I was only charged for the injections which I thought was pretty good. I normally go to vets for pets which is extortionate, £25 per guinea pig just for consultation.
