Hi, My guinea pig Zoey has mange..... again. I thought it was all cured but it came back. The vet is too expenisve so I am treating her with a cream that cured her once. But I am worried because I lost 2 guinea pigs Lola and Alisha to Mange. What can I do? Please help!?!?!?!? Thanks....

Treating for mange - caused by mites - is something you can do. Either use a spot on treatment like Xeno450 - dosage given on box according to pig's weight, or by shampooing - I use Johnson's insecticidal shampoo for small animals, shampoo every week for 3 weeks then every 6-8 weeks to stop it returning. I would also advise completely disinfecting the hutch too.

I assume that you are talking about mange mites? You need to treat them with ivermectin at least 3-4 times with a 10 day gap in between. Any lotions and potions that don't contain ivermectin won't do the trick.

You also need to thoroughly disinfect your hutch/cage - mites can get into the smallest cracks and make a comeback from there. Eggs can also survive in the skin and turn up whenever a piggy is stressed by something or weakened by an illness.

You can get ivermectin as xeno 450 (or xeno 50 for small guinea pigs under 800g) over the internet. If you have a problem with recurring mites, you can treat preventatively once a month after the treatment has finished.
