Hi I wonder if anyone has encountered their guinea pig catching mange mites from pigeons. I have a lot of pigeons which seem to hang around in my garden and I do put my piggies out in the summer in a run. The reason I asked this is I have just lost a piggie who had mange. I took her to the vets but the stress of it all resulted in her giving up eating and subsequently died. I know they can catch mange from foxes and cats but wondered if anyone has heard of them catching mange from pigeons

I'm not sure about catching it from pigeons, however if you have any other piggies it may be a good idea to treat them as a precaution before they end up poorly. :)

My other piggie had caught it as well but not so bad and she is responding well to treatment, in fact her skin has nearly heeled up.

I'm very glad. Hope she gets well soon and sorry for your loss.

foxes are very often the carrier of mange mites, I'm sure we have all seen mangy foxes and it would be all to easy for a fox the come into the garden have a scratch and deposit infected skin on the ground then guineas come into contact with it and hey presto- infected guineas

I preventatively treat pigs here having seen some pretty grim mange cases in my rescue.

three monthly is usually okay.

Sorry you lost your piggy to it and anorexia.
