Evening....my Sasha-Boo looks as though she s got the mange...her skin is sore for me to groom and she has a scaly rash that she is scratching. She s still eating but I don t know what to do for her. I HAVE to go away for 4 days tomorrow so can t get her to the vets. Can I rub her skin with olive oil or anything to alleviate her symptoms? I read elsewhere that canestan can be used...what do you think?

Hi welcome to the forum.

First of all please do not put olive oil on her skin, if it is a fungal condition it will cause it to heat up and make it worse.

This could be mange mites which would need to be treated with a course of Ivermectin, preferably by injection at the vets. The other possbility is fungal, which can either be ringworm (which the vet can culture for) or a different strain which would not show up on any tests. Either way she does need to see a vet as soon as possible for diagnosis, treatment and pain relief. Is there anyone who could take her to the vets while you are away?

Please could you confirm your location.

Canesten can be used on fungal but it needs to be confirmed that it is fungal and if so you are only treating the one part of the pig whereas for fungal the whole pig needs to be treated so I prefer to use Imaverol. It would need to be Canesten 1% too which is the nappy rash one.

Hi & welcome to the forum :) It sounds like she really needs to see a vet for a proper diagnosis, please don't use home remedies as they could do more harm than good. Is there anyone else who can take her for you? Maybe the person looking after her whilst you are away?

I'm in Bedford. I have a teenager looking after her in my absence. If I could change my plans, I would. What can I do?

I would arrange for someone to do a vet trip. These conditions can be fatal to our little ones. Not to mention the agony of scratching soreness and fitting if mites are present.

Putting anything on your piggies that you're not sure about is not advisable can do more harm than good. Good luck with it all.

If you can get a neighbour to help take her with your teenager that would be great. Scott vets is a recommended one in Bedford. Natalie is the best one for piggies :) If it is mange mites then the sooner she is treated the better as they can cause fits in piggies :(

I am concerned at her being left in case she starts fitting from scratching. Is there any way you could get her seen by the emergency vet tonight?

I will call my local vets in the morning and try and get her seen as an emergency. It doesn t make me feel easy about leaving her. Will they prescribe a cream for my piggy sitter to administer?

Not if it is mange mites. She will need to be treated with Ivermectin, please ask for injections rather and Spot on as it seems like it is quite advanced. She will then need 2 further injections which should be a week to 10 days apart. I would ask about pain relief too, which the vet can also give by injection to start with if your pet sitter cannot give medication but please follow up with the vet when you are back to get oral pain relief that she can have daily.
