Misty who came into the rescue over the weekend has the start of fungal on her back - she's a teddy and it's thinning but no bald bits.

It's not that i'm worried about but just incase it's connected her ears are SO MANKY. Really crusty on the inside?

It feels like wax I suppose - it's not scabby at all but it's not very nice to look at and I am wondering if it's bothering her?

Anyone had this before?

I *think* Flopsy had one ear like this when she was fungal, I think but not sure. I Need to start keeping proper records of ailments I think and treatments. (that was a note to self!)

what colour is it?could be ear mites! in which case i have found ivomec clears it up,clean out he ears and see how she reacts!normally ear mites are black!

Nerys had slightly manky ears this spring and got surolan ear drops from the vet - they treat a range of conditions, from fungal, bacterial to ear mites and are anti-inflammatory. It's cleared her ears, even though she hated me for them!

Most of the 30 snake food rescues were teddies and some had DISGUSTING ears. The rescue lady uses a medical shampoo for fungal issues and gets it all down the ears and lets it sit for a few minutes before cleaning it out. How she makes the piggy sit still for five minutes without eating shampoo I don't know...

I ivomec'd her yesterday so it's fungal bath tomorrow.

I will give the ears a good clean out then see how they are after that.

Thanks guys!

I find that the rex coated pigs are more prone to waxy ears - to do with having curly hairs in their ears to trap it and the hairs that shed don't drop out easily as the smooth coat types, the hairs irrtate the ear canal - I add a drop or two of olive oil to sofen the wax , massage in it for a minute and clean out with cotton buds - using a twist between my fingers rather than a gouge it out technique, if that makes sense. I often have to use round ended tweezers to get the last of the hairs that are tickling the ear canal - you have to have a pig that will tolerate being towel wrapped and a steady hand!

Pigs with dark skin will have dark wax and light skinned pigs pale wax. If she's been treated with Ivomectin she shouldn't have any active mites in there.

She has the same drops as Wiebke (Surolan)

It seems to cover mites, bacterial, infections etc

Hopefully she will improve alot over the next few weeks.

I have a teddy gp who had very scabby and dry ears - i was looking at them and i got a pair of twizers - i didn't put them right in her ear, but I literaly got hold a piece of dry bit just on the flap and gently pulled it and it pulled a lot of dry skin and wax out of her ear - it was very big and i couldn't believe it - i didnt hurt her and she didn't even notice i did it - i did it on both ears and touch wood, they have been fine since.

before you do the drops try and give them a good clean first, ive had guineas in with ears like this after a few good cleans there ears where fine, keep on with the drops just incase but clean the ears out before giving the drops, has you will find the drops loosen a lot of the stuff x

They do look manky, poor Misty! I agree with Claire that giving them a clean is worthwhile, get as much gunk out as you can. I use cotton buds to clean out the ear folds, just being careful not to put the buds in the ear so to speak.

Keep us updated. :) xx

Well today LOADS of really gross stuff came out of her ears and she's been scratching them too. They look alot better and I think a few days and she will feel better. One of them looked really blocked this morning but I couldn't safely get out what was blocking it however Misty did it herself sometime today, I bet everything is louder to her now, hope it makes her feel more secure not less secure.

She ate greens on my lap earlier which is HUGE and she doesn't flip about when I get her out.

I give her 2 or 3 weeks before she's a totally different pig!

Sounds like you and Misty are making great progress. I'm sure she'll be feeling a lot more friendly once her ears are clear as well. :)
