My best friend and I were playing with this little boy (he's in kindergarten) and his friend who is a few years older than him. He had the sweetest little guinea pig! I held it and soon enough, I feel in love with the adorable thing. I had had hamsters previously, but never a guinea pig.

Then, my friend and I saw this hideous plastic tote with no lid. It had feces caked an inch high on the inside and water flooding part of it (At least, lets hope it was only water). I had to try so hard from being furious. After all, he couldn't have know better. We asked him if this was where he kept the guinea pig, and he said yes.

He picked her up and she scratched him so he dropped her and she ran squealing under the lip in the house. I was able to coax her out with a carrot. He said he couldn't keep her any longer and I asked if I could take her in. My parents said no. I cried because I knew she'd die if she stayed with him (she had no actual guinea pig food).

A week later, my step mom told me that these girls that live next door had the guinea pig and took her without her mom knowing and she couldn't keep her. My parents finally let me keep the guinea pig.

She was a wee little baby when I first got her. Now, she's a year old and thriving! The quirkiest, adorable, "Hey, I need attention!" personality ever.

She gets jealous of me giving attention to the dog, so she squeals at the top of her longs. She also does that whens he wants a Carrot :)p

Having just been through a very similar scenario within the past 55 hours, I can tell you it was NOT only water. This guinea pig is absolutely beautiful, such shiny hair and such dramatic colors! As others have been thanking me, I will in turn thank you for rescuing this lovely animal.

Thank you :). When I found her, her hair was very dull and very dirty. Now it's glossy and beautiful drool

She is a gorgeous piggie x)

Thank you! :D. I'm going to clean her cage and give her a bath in a little while, I'm going to take some pictures drool

What a sweet girl! Well done for rescuing her; she a beauty! Which parents would allow their child to keep a piggy in such a way?

Thank you! I don't think I had a choice, she was just a sweet little thing at the time (she still is sweet, just not little XD), I almost screamed when I saw her conditions. A plastic tote with an inch of water and/or urine and feces. No actual Guinea Pig feed or hay, just living off of carrots and grass (that is dangerous for guinea pigs because it is treated).

Well done for saving her from a most certainly awful and probably short life of grime. She looks as if she's thriving and has turned into a lush piggy. Gorgeous little lips and tongue!

Thanks! Yeah, looking at her now you can't even tell that she had a rough start :(|)

I'm going to spoil her and make her the happiest guinea pig ever! XD. (In a few months time).

So, every quarter in school I get money for my grades. if I get all A's, I get $100. I figure a new cage would make my Maria so much more happy, but the ones at the store are way overpriced (Hers was almost $100 for a small cage!), so I'm going to make her a C&C cage when I get some money in a few months! It'll be two stories, and have a ramp and a hay bin. Of course, I'm going to try and litter train her in the mean time since C&C cages are harder to clean (in my opinion). Plus, it'd be way more sanitary for her. Imagine her surprise when she has a huge cage to explore with some brand new toys. I can hear the WHEEEKS! now!

I was wondering, how do you go about cleaning a C&C cage? I know how in general, but what are your methods? Just detach the grids and live the grid that is connected to the coroplast on and take it out and dump the contents in the dumpster? (that's how I get rid of the stuff in her cage when i clean it, I take the plastic bottom out to the dumpster and then hose it down and dry it.)

It's going to be about 1.8 grids wide, 3 grids long, 2 grids high, and that's where my dresser ends, but I have a desk with shelves right next to it so if I put supports from the second grid level for a loft overlaping onto the shelf I have enough room for a nice sized loft for her that is 1x1.5-1.8. (14'' per grid). With a ramp made out of 1 grid wrapped in a towel so she can comfortably climb it. (better for space than a 3 grid long ramp.). It'd be about $86.20, but her current cage is about that expensive and it's waaaay smaller.

Sadly, there isn't enough room in the cage for another guinea pig and I have no room for a larger cage and I can't afford another pet XD. (I have a dog, two leopard geckos, and Maria.)

Maria died today. She made a gagging noise so I looked in her cage and she started twitching and I took her igloo off her and I petted her thinking she might be having a nightmare and she didn't respond. I rolled her over a few times and she didn't respond. Usually she would have been freaking out and getting angry. She started gagging again and I took her into a towel and held her and she smelled so horrible and had thrown up on herself and soiled herself. Her eyes were all milky and crusted. I held her and cleaned her up and sang her favorite song to her and she passed when the song ended. I looked on the food my parents had been recently buying for her and there was no vitamin C in it, so I'm pretty sure it was scurvy. My parents bought that food because it was the cheapest. Her patch of bald skin was probably caused by that too. :0 . My old dog had a similar story, my parents didn't want to spend money on her so she ended up with many tumors and died.

I haven't been active in a long time but I figured I should let everyone know what happened. I've only had her about 3 years since she was little.

She was the best quirky guinea pig I could ever ask for. RIP, my maria.
