Cibach
Junior Guinea Pig
As some of you may remember, one of our piggies, Marigold, was due to have surgery last week to remove a lump from her side. Well she had her op last Wednesday and just sailed through it. She was admitted at 9 am and had her op early pm. It was a very large lump that had grown quite quickly, but was discreet (ie it had not spread) and was not attached to any of the underlying tissue. The debate was whether it was a fatty lump or a sebaceous cyst. The vet told me that once he had removed it and cut into it, it was clearly a tumour of some kind, but that he was confident that he had removed it all. Marigold is a big, healthy girl, despite her poor start in life, and the large (2-2.5 inches), vertical wound she has on her left flank doesn't seem to bother her at all. It's healing nicely and she seems to enjoy having it bathed every day. She has not scratched at it at all, as far as I can tell. Her hair is starting to grow back too so soon the scar will be invisible.
Her daughter, Ruby, with whom she lives, had to spend the day alone whilst her Mum was at the vet. She's usually a cheeky little thing but was quite subdued and hid away in her box. We decided to give her some company and partitioned off a portion of the big pen so she could see and talk to the big group, but not mix with them. Well she's quite the little madam! She visited the partition often which encouraged the others to do the same, and then bit any noses that poked through the grid to say Hello!
Only Latte, the boss of the large group, was left unscathed and the only because she saw what was happening. She did sit next to the partition and tell Ruby off, but what can you do with teenagers! Ruby spent the rest of the time just watching the others from the far end of the pen.
It did cross my mind that if anything happened to Marigold during her op, I might have tried to introduce Ruby to the large group, I don't think this would have been a success and am mightily relieved, on so many levels, that Marigold is fine.
