I noticed a couple of days ago that Marjorie's eye looked like it was weeping. I didn't really think much of it, thinking maybe she had maybe accidentally been poked in the eye by hay? Tonight it looks bulged and I'm thinking she may have an abscess behind her eye? :(

I am going to see if I can get a vet appointment tomorrow. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

I'm so nervous about what the vets going to say

My Tim had a bulging eye and it turned out to be a retrobulbar abscess. He is being treated by Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit clinic in Northampton. Are you able to get there at all? Is she managing to eat OK? I will tag our dental specialists for you.

Yes she's eating fine. her appetite is the same. Sadly I don't drive so won't be able to get to Northampton. I do have a very good vet so I'm hoping they'll be able to help.
I feel guilty for not thinking it was something serious :(

It may not be what Tim has. See what the vet thinks and go from there.

hopefully its just an eye poke injury as opposed to an abcess, but you need to get Marjorie to a vet ASAP, she needs checking. the eye has probably been damaged & started to ulcerate, there is the possibility of a foreign body lodged under her eyelid/in her eye. the weeping is the bodies reaction to try & flush the eye & rid it of unwanted debris (be it dust or grass seed etc).

a vet will be able to remove anything causing damage to the eye & give her painkilling eyedrops to do it. She will probably need either Tiacil or fucalthmic? spelling? eyedrops.
usually an orange die is put into the eye & a light shone into it to see if it has been damaged.

Ask the vet to give you painkillers as it is probably very painful- i know what its like to have an eyelash or a grain of sand in my eye ... hurts like hell!

try boiling about an egg cup full of water & add a pinch of salt to it, then let it cool. drip some of it into marjories eye if you can, if you have a new/clean syringe use that, if not have a strip of kitchen roll dipped into the saltwater & drip in that way. it should help to soothe &clean it, until you get to a vets.

if its an eye poke or foreign body any local vet should be able to treat it, although it may have emergency hours as its a saturday or only open in the morning as mine is.
if it is an abcess causing the eye to bulge, the vet will be able to tell you this & maybe refer you to a specialist or as helen says get him to the cat & rabbit clinic. (piggy trains can sometimes be arranged for transport where members kindly drive the guineas to vets/new homes if the owners dont have transport.. contact stewybus if needed)

one of mine had a bulging eye years ago & i was warned it may rupture & she may lose the eye, it turned out to be a very fine grass seed strand lodged round her eyeball, this was removed & it took about 7-10 days to go back to normal when being treated with drops.
please get her treated as a matter of urgency if the eye is bulging though, complications & serious implications (even eye removal) can result if not treated quick enough.

good luck with an appointment, healing vibes & keep us updated.

the girls & I

I've been to the vet, she checked her eye and there is no damage to the eye itself and she checked her teeth, which were fine. Today you could see a red mark on in the corner of her eye, on the white flesh part (sorry I don't know the name?) So we are thinking she's been poked in the eye.

She's on eye drops and if it gets worse I'm to go back on Tuesday.

Thank you everyone for your help x

Marjorie was back at the Vets today, her eye has got worse and I could feel a lump on her jaw, so she is going in to have a dental/exam. Fingers crossed all goes well and she'll be back to her normal self soon

l have a pig that has bulging eyes , and they have a glasesd aperanceis , it can be quite frighterning , but as far as l can remember she has been like this
, l hope it is the same as your pig, but you are right to take her to your vet, the eyes are so delicate

It does sound like something more than a hay poke. It's great that you are so vigilant and are taking her to the vet as soon as you see something is amiss. Fingers crossed for the dental exam.

I'm sorry it is looking like dental. If you have a look at Tim's thread there are some photos and you will be able to see if it looks similar.

Marjorie has been xrayed and her teeth have been checked under anaesthetic and were fine. The mass on her jaw has been examined and a biopsy has been taken. She's on baytril and Metacam for the next few days to see if they help at all. Her eye has gotten worse over two days so the vet is now thinking she has a mass behind it and will probably lose her eye :(

Sounds like Tim :( if it is any help he is happy as larry with one eye and apparently still humping his companion non stop. She will feel so much better once the pressure has gone.
