Hi,
I need your piggies help!
I have a few plants which are 100% safe for piggies and i was thinking of drying thema nd selling them as natural piggies treats :) all I need to know is have your piggies tried any of the following:
dried strawberry leaves,
dried herbs,
dried nettles,
dried bramble leaves,
dried dandilions?
If so, did they enjoy them and what are your veiws on them? my piggies have had strawberry, bramble adn nettle and they adored it lol :)
 
:) my piggies have only had the dandelion nature snacks from pampered piggies and they love them :smitten: :smitten:

would buy them to try PM if you decide to sell them
 
I sell all of the above and all are popular stawberry leaf especially which I'm out of at the moment so if you have some let me know your details and ill pass customers your way!

However, I too am growing my own crop and at the moment and you have to bear in mind that most people who sell dried leafage/herbage sell them for about £1.50 per 50gms

I was shocked at how little dandelion etc weighs when its dry :o So go for it if you have loads its certainly easy to do if you have the space to dry them safely and hygenically but my only advice is to work out how much you have when dried as its easy to over estimate! O0 Good Luck

I only have a few starwberry plants at the moment but I am only doign a little test to see how it works out so if it goes well i'll get some more plants, but we have pleanty of the otehr stuff :)
 
When you say bramble leaves you mean blackberry bushes yes? Can they eat them dried and fresh also can they eat the blackberries? We have brambles outside our back gate and we never pick the blackberries it would be good to get something outta them :) :)
 
You can give them the younger leaves- older ones have prickles on which would can cause abscesses if they tear/puncture the mouth/lips. Some of mine will eat the berries too ::)
 
must say mine aint to keen on the dried dandelion, they prefer everything fresh :)

although my mum keeps taking all the fresh dandelion for her tortoises! lol

No Beth go for it seriously, I think its a really good idea, I was warning about the weight issue as it caught me out so didnt want you making my mistakes
Seriously though I think its great I'm all for people making a bit of extra cash with piggies benefitting!

Dazie you can give blackberry leaves and if you only have a few you can dry them in an airing cupboard!

I was just gonna ask that lol ;D I would love to dry some for my piggies but not sure what to do all the leaves that I see dry up go all crunchie!
 
I wash them first then air dry them, in my walkin boiler cupboard, its been tiled etc and made into a safe sterile room for drying so I can sell them on without getting sued for contaminated leafage! ;D

But if your just drying it for your own piggies and friends just tye them up with some string and hang them either in a warm kitchen or the airing cupboard for a week.
Most dried leafage especially soft fruit leaves like blackberry and strawberry will go britle and crunch up so thats why i hang them so that they dry intact.

I'm sure piggies willl prefer the leaves fresh though! But if you have lots worth drying them out for the winter months when fresh herbage is limited.

Ooh and finally nettle is really easy to dry but DONT give piggies the fresh leaves as they will sting! Once dried the sting no longer exists, just mind fingers and arms when tying them as i always without fail get stung to death! ;) good luck, let us know your successes!
 
Think I will give drying them ago and save some up for the winter, the nettle I will leave up to you and get it from your site lol save me getting poorly fingers I hate nettle stings! :)
 
Mine have the Excel Nettle,Mint and Dandelion Sticks. I also buy them Dried Dandelion, Herbal Garden, Meadow Flowers, Ribwort and Parsley Stalks from Zooplus. I do give them fresh dandelions but it is not always possible to find them.

Grow your own? ;) I have Dandelions and Chicory (which is similar and easier to grow imo) in, plus Plantain etc.
 
i agree its not hard to grow my green house is full at the moment with Yarrow, vetch, trefoils, dandelion, cornflower, camomile, agrimony, marshmallow and milk thistle-
I also have carrots, Jerusalum artichoke, blackberries, strawberries and raspberries growing outside- they are all so easy

You can get seeds from planet guinea and Pampered piggies.. IF your not green fingered then start with some cereal grass from planet guinea its fool proof- I just scattered it on the ground and it grew! I dont even have the best soil so it goes to show it doesnt take much!

If you pick nettle when its flowering it doesnt sting!! :D
 
I have grown my own before but the dogs ate the first batch of parsley and grass and I never got around to planting any more.
 
;D my puppy is the same- Ive had to fence off a section of hte garden to grow things otherwise she has them little so and so..

Yesterday I left the store room door open and she had several willow balls and gift baskets which were in a low box on the floor she chewed them to pieces all over the sittingroom floor- she got sent to bed! :tickedoff:

She might have learnt her lesson if 5mins later i hadnt given her abig cuddle told her she was naughty then gave in to those gorgeous eyes and gave her a big bone to eat!

I'm a rubbish mother! never get a cavalier king charles spaniel thinkng they are lap dogs, gorgeous loonatics the lot of them :smitten:
