Hi my pig has a massive abdominal abcess - xrays taken today attached

This has grown within one week - last sunday he felt normal, by friday he had this massive swollen belly

Vet (who I respect and trust) doesn't think it's possible to operate, fluid is likely to leak and cause peritonitis

I went to say goodbye and they said I could take him home for the evening

Just wanted to double check if anyone has had anything like this happen and if any surgery was done

He still has a bit of life in him

Thanks

I’m so sorry you have had this diagnosis. If your vet thinks there is nothing to be done then you can respect their expertise and help your piggy over the bridge knowing there wasn’t any more to be done.

But if your piggy still seems like they have the will to fight then Zithromax is a very good antibiotic for abscesses. My piggy had a very large dental abscess, which I know is totally different than your diagnosis, but as a last ditch try it might be worth it. How old is he and has he been well up until now? Is he eating ok? Is his weight stable?

My boy was on Zithromax for 6 weeks plus a good amount of pain meds. The Cat and Rabbit vets in Northampton are piggy specialists. I’ve driven there from Swindon and it was 100% worth it.

I know @FurryFriends has used two different types of antibiotics for an abscess that tracked through the body of a piggy. Good luck. ❤️

So very sorry that you have had such bad news.
Cysts can flare up with frightening speed.
Holding you in my heart ♥️
