Hi all

I'm currently looking after my mother's guinea pig Caramel while my mother's on holiday. Caramel's claws were badly in need of cutting and when I did them I noticed a rather large painful looking sore underneath her front left foot. It's lumpy and so bad that she can't walk on it properly and it looks like it very recently bled and then healed again. I'm thinking she probably needs the vet so I will make an appointment, but in the meantime I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas? I'm wondering if a nail got infected or something like that. I'm really cross with my mum for letting it get so bad but she's had her own health problems.

Hi,

I don't have any experience of this personally but there is something guinea pigs get on their feet called bumblefoot. It might me worth searching this on the internet.

hi Yes this sounds like bumblefoot. She Will need to see the vet. Gorgeous guineas Also sell products that help sooth the foot. Let us know how she gets on. I remember there was a thread a while ago on this subject so search around x x

Yup, sounds like bumblefoot. My Willow had it when I got her, and she hardly walked at all :( Take her to the vet, but I will also recommend a chlorhexidine solution to soak her foot in until you can make a vet appointment :)

Ah thanks so much everyone. Caramel has an appointment this morning. Good to know what it probably is. I'll let you know how she gets on :)

was going to say the same that it sounds like bumblefoot.

The vets gave me some stuff for my piggy that had it.. i think it was caused by the hay, since putting sawdust down, then just a little hay on top it helped (although sawdust can cause respiratory problems) and mine got better.

My 2 new girls have this, and they are on sawdust, so going to change to hay.. its never ending isnt it :)) x

Well, this vet was useless :(

He said he'd never seen something like that before and that it was probably some sort of tumour even thoughe he had never, repeat never, seen one on a guinea pig's foot?!

I couldn't remember the name of the condition I'd read here but I was so sure my vet would know that I didn't write it down, grrr.

He insisted it was pointless giving Caramel antibiotics as it didn't look like an infection.

Okay I'm not a vet but I've seen pictures of Bumblefoot on the internet and Caramel's foot looks just like those examples, if a worser version poor thing.

I've told my mum to take her to her vet when she picks her up but in the meantime I've started bathing her foot in the chlorheixidine or whatever it is.

Thanks guys - I'd never have known if it wasn't for asking here.

argh vets! Where are you or your mum located as we may be able to advise you of a piggy savvy vet. X

Thank you, as I said above I did take her to vet but he wasn't helpful :(

My mum lives on the Surrey/Berks border so if anyone knows of good guinea pig vets in either Camberley, Aldershot, Farnborough Crowthorne or even Bracknell that would be helpful!

perhaps start a new thread with this in the title to attract people from the area :)
