It seems awful having to think about this after Barry dying only this afternoon but I am worried about Alan being lonely :(

What would be my best option?

A group of neutered girls for Alan (Who is still intact) or another young boar for him?

I hate the thought of in the future when he or his mate dies having to find another suitable friend. I know that sounds awful but I'm wondering whether to have a little herd?

I am so sorry that you have to find a new friend for Alan.

I have started my Tribe initially to avoid yet another scramble to set up a round of piggy dating at a rescue when it became obvious that my old lady Dizzy would be with us for very much longer. (OK, I went a bit overboard afterwards; I am the first to admit that!)

Having Alan neutered in order to have him living with a pair of sows (open to adding... :))) is certainly an option; I built the Tribe around my neutered boar Llewelyn. However, you want to find an experienced vet for that, as post op complications are not uncommon. You will find that living with a girl/several girls is any boar's dream come true!

Otherwise, boar dating at a reputable rescue is the alternative in order to have the best chance at a stable bond. It doesn't necessarily have to be a baby boar; some adult boars well past their hormones can happily live together provided they like each other and their characters compliment each other - especially if they are both rather laid back. But it needs an experienced person who can judge boars and is willing to invest the time it takes to bond that way, and not many will do it.

Thank you!

I like the idea of a little tribe but unfortunately none of out vets our guineapig savy!

Ah. Is there an option for neutering him? If not, maybe another boar would be a better choice. :)

Hi you're from Norfolk yes?
I'm sure there's some savvy cavy vets down there, from past members i remember them talking about them...... :)
As for friends maybe a good rescue who'll do piggie dating :)

Would you consider travelling as far as Nottingham to have Alan neutered? There is one of the best piggy savvy vets in the whole of the country with lots of practice in neutering, as he does it regularly for RNGP Welfare rescue in Rugby. Furryfriends (the admin on here) has moved close to him. Perhaps you could pm her for help? I took Hywel there after he nearly died from his post op complications and the vet who was seeing him didn;t have a clue what he was dealing with. Both Simon Maddock and his wife have the best bedside manners I have ever come across!

You want to see Simon Maddock:

Thank you all for your replies; I have only just noticed more comments on this thread. I'm still in two minds with what to do for the best.

Alan seems OK at the moment but is cuddling right up to me so I know he misses cudding up to something warm. I'm sure he really misses Barry :( I'd hate to replace his mate so soon but I'm also aware that he might be lonely!

I'm thinking of looking into getting him another boar? Can anyone recommend a good rescue other than Sophie in my area? (I believe she is about to have a baby soon so doesn't have any to rehome)

Thanks! :)
