hi all

Was talking to Maurice and noticed that he could hardly keep his eye open but it wasn't like a sleepy eye shut it was like he couldn't keep it open for some reason :(
took him out and from my eye experience with humans he looks to have either entropion or ectropion
heres a pic can someone give some advice :) i am taking him to the vet tomorrow

I may be totally wrong, but I think I may be seeing a hay seed in the fatty tissues that are inflamed under the eye...the two yellowish husk type things...?

Personally I would say tonight, it's not going to be very comfortable for him if they are left in there overnight. You could try flushing the eye by applying a small but steady stream of saline/water to the eye for a few moments, but looking at it, if it is a seed/husk stuck in the tissues it will likely require a steady hand to remove the offending object. My understanding is that if the seed meets any resistance when attempting to remove it, then you should not try to continue yourself.

Once the seed/husk is removed you should be perfectly fine to treat at home - either with Fucithalmic eye drops or Optrex Infected Eyes for just a day or two until his eye is on its way back to normal.

update on Mo

just back from the vet and whatever was in his eye has been removed by the nice vet lady :(|) it looked seed like she says it looks inflamed a little obviously just with the object irritating it so we have got clinagel ointment to put in twice a day and an appt for a check on thursday just to see that they eye is healing in the right direction :)

Here's hoping Maurice's eye clears up right as ninepence hun. Did they say what it was that was in his eye?

they didnt say exactly what it was but when i suggested hay seed like Laura did the vet agreed it did look hay like what she wiped out with a wet cotton bud
the bit of the eyelid that I thought was inside out was his conjunctiva which had got inflamed due to irritation
says if its not healing (looks almost normal already though) he will need to go under the knife to remove the wee flap of skin but piggy paws crossed that wont be needed :)

Piggy toes crossed that this settles down quickly. So glad you were able to get him to the vet tonight instead of having to wait. x

I'm glad he's sorted, I think you did the right thing getting him sorted last night. Fingers crossed the inflammation recedes.

Some of my pigs have/had quite fatty tissues under their eyelids, like Maurice's picture shows (albeit without the foreign object stuck), and I had them removed in one pig (local anesthetic) and not removed in the others. It's personal choice which route you take, but to me it's mainly about whether the pig shows any signs of being bothered by those flaps that touch the eye. For a while Errol had the small fatty flap/lump resting on his eye from his upper eyelid, and it disappeared on its own, not sure how/why/where but it did! :))

Thanks laura I am glad we took him last night as he did look like he was wincing with it - the vet probably thought "oh god heres another overprotectice piggy mum" or nutter more likely mallethead but I'm glad he got sorted poor Paul had to pay for it but I will pay him back {:| sometime

I'm hoping he doesnt need to go in for an op as know he hates the V.E.T (just in case he reads this post id better spell it out :)) )

I will keep you all posted on how hes doing thanks again for the advice much appreciated :)

How is the handsome lad today?

Hi Laura

Thanks for asking about our handosme lad :(|)

he is absolutely fine this morning although he got into trouble off his daddy for not sitting still to get his eyedrops in and it went all over his snout :)) poor little mite was starting to get upset but OH managed to get a small amount of eyedrops into him. Mo then went happily back to eating his cabbage leaf after that probably muttering away to himself or Jules about how we had just abused him putting eyedrops in rolleyes

got an appointment at vet tomorrow night just to make sure his eye is making progress the way it should but it looks completely normal to us - thank god we have their cavy cosies as I can put him in his and put him in a box to get him to the vet as its a one person job as OH working - eek going to have be {:| and tempt him in there with some veggies me thinks

Thanks again for your advice the other night was much appreciated x

I forgot to say back then what a great photo you got. Not always easy to get such a clear photo of something so small! I hope the appointment goes well tomorrow. :)
