My two guinea pigs are only 11weeks old so they are still pretty small. There cage at the moment is plenty big enough as they are able to run around loads but as its a pet shop cage it wont be big enough when they are fully grown. So i was thinking in a few weeks/months i will build them a C&C cage but i want it to be big enough for 3 guinea pigs in case i give in and buy another one later one (not planning to atm though). So what grid size do you recommend and how do you make it a closed cage as i see most of them are open but i have a dog so it would need to be closed.

I have hinged my lid on one side so that I can raise the whole thing for access. A 4x2 grid is the minimum for 2 piggies, for 3 piggies you would need a 5x2, an alternative if you have the space would be a 4x4, this would provide a little more space than a 5x2.

Just a quick question, what sex are your piggies cos if you have a pair of boars I don't think its advisable to put another piggie in. If its sows you would be able to put another sow or a neutered boar. X

they are two sows.
ye ive got a pretty big bedroom so i might make a 4x4. Think i would have to start using fleece if i did thou as i reckon it would cost alot with woodshavings. With the lid is it still easy to clean out? x

yes it doesn't affect access at all. I only learnt this after changing the layout twice within a week! (I've only had my piggies 2 weeks) If you hinge it on one side using cable ties then the whole lid opens and its just the same as if there wasn't a lid at all. I need a lid cos I've got 2 over eager cats and dogs. I use fleece which I change every 3 days. Just make sure you've got spares to put in whilst washing one set. X

ok I'm going to look into making one soon then. There are so many cute things i want to get them like cuddle cosys but i need a bigger cage to do this. What size is your one? x

I've got mine in my open plan conservatory so I'm quite fortunate in that I have the space to have a bigger cage than I need. I've got a 5x4 cage which currently has 4 girls in (I did have a boar in too but he's been poorly so is in a cage of his own at the mo). I also have a neutered couple in a 5x2 cage which again is bigger than needed but I prefer that than to just stick to the minimum. X

ohh ** piggies are very lucky that you have so much space to give them. i think I'm going to have to measure and see actually how big i can go. As i dont no how big the grids relate to cms. x

If you use the more common grids they're 14 inches which is about 35cm I think. X

I've just re-read this and I've made a mistake. I didn't mean 4x4, I meant 4x3. Sorry. X

ok ye a 4x3 sounds better in terms of the space that i have!
thanks alot :)
ohh i will have to go and have a nose at them now :)
