Maybe A Skin Problem?

Ok, apparently the shampoo range contains essential oils including tea tree which should not be used on pigs. It would depend which shampoo you have though and what exactly is in it. I am not sure what to recommend as an alternative though if the vet has not diagnosed fungal and it is simply for sore skin. I will message you if I come up with anything.

Could he have dermatitis caused by the excess amount of grease he had on his rump?

When we got him I noticed dandruff on his rump and his fur sticking up, we also noticed a lot of grease, my son then took him to the first vet who said he was producing too much grease and it was irritating his skin, he was then given hibiscrub and metacam. My son cleaned the greasy area daily until he had more or less non there.

I noticed his fur was still sticking up which is why I posted on here again about it, as you know we booked him into the PDSA, he went today, that vet said he looked sore and red and that he still had a little bit of grease left, prescribed the shampoo in the post above.

I'm assuming both vets think it's the same thing.

The dandruff cleared btw.

I'm just putting it in one area so anyone reading doesn't have to go back and fourth lol.

It is possible. I am still leaning towards Imaverol as it is a really good emollient and would also treat any scurfy skin even if it is not fungal.

I can't see the ingredients in the link for the shampoo, but it does look like it is used to treat scurfy skin. Anything you do use, I would patch test for 48 hours behind the ear first and if there is any redness don't use it.

Can you buy Imaverol or is it prescription only? Thank's for replying so quickly btw.

Ok I'll let my son know about the patch testing.

Apparently these are the ingredients (I did a search again)

Composition:
  • Ammonium lactate
  • Piroctone olamine
  • Essential oils
  • Chitosanide

Thank you. Ideally we need to know the exact essential oils though.

Has anyone else on here used this on their pig?

Have just said on your new thread that you may find opinions are very divided on essential oils.

Yeah thanks, I just read, what can I do for him in the meantime as I'm not able to afford the stuff you suggested yesterday for a couple of weeks? :(

Sorry, sometimes I don't read correctly due to rubbish concentration.

PS - I even asked the vets that he first went to and they said

"Hey Kerrie, Unfortunately we do not stock that product so I would not be able to comment but if you contact the PDSA they will be able to check it out with their supplier for you smile emoticon Sorry I couldn't help x"

Excuse the kiss at the end, I think it's Candy the receptionist, she's very nice and has always tried to help me where our dog and piggies are concerned.

Thanks, I'm going to send my son up to check at the pharmacists near us.

Should we keep using the hibiscrub and if so how long for? I'm a bit concerned because I don't want him getting a fungal problem.

I also checked the closest exotic vets which is in Derby, unfortunately the vet who deals with guinea's is on maternity leave.. doh.

Ahh but it's already red, or do you mean if it gets worse? and thanks for the help/advice, I really appreciate it.

Has it eased at all since you stopped using the Hibiscrub? I meant if it gets worse but if the Hibiscrub did cause the initial redness then I will have a rethink.

No he was already red and sore according to the first vet my son took him too, he was still sore and red when he went to see the second vet, it doesn't seem to have eased since we stopped using the scrub, his fur is still sticking up :(

I would keep up with it for now then until you can get the Imaverol. Is he ok in himself?

Sorry @helen105281 I had a tooth pulled out yesterday and wasn't feeling at all well, so I went off to bed early.

Jericho seems fine, eating, drinking, walking around the cage chuntering to himself, wheeking, he's a funny little boy lol. It's sort of weird to think he wasn't really bothered with, yeah he's a bit nippy when you hold him or try and stroke him, but he just flops down on you or next to you and the fact he's bonded so well with Big's amazes me as well. He's a very nice guinea pig, I'm sure he'll stop nipping, I'm wondering if it's because he's a bit sore or it's just because he wasn't handled much, it doesn't bother us, it's not like he draws blood. Big he was a bit of a nipper as well, he's not so bad now, tends to lick.

I'm considering taking him back to the vets, but I don't know which! The one's that know about exotic pets are miles away from us and we don't drive :(

thanks again for the help.

Ouch, hope you're feeling better.

I think it could be a mixture of the 2. I will send you a message with some ideas I have on my lunchbreak.

Hope you and Jericho are both feeling better soon! :)

He's still not great, had another bad night. He's still reluctant to eat so going back to the vets this evening and see what they say this time.... I really hope we can get this figured out soon.
I'll let you know what they say later.
