As some of you know I have a young sow (22 1/2 weeks) who had 4 babies on 2 June. All seemed to be doing well. The boys are rumbling well and swaying but I gather from Wiebke that their hormones could well have kick-started as a result as mum coming into season. They are 3 weeks on Thursday and so I am watching them carefully and have started to weigh them.

As I weighed them I decided to weigh the girls. The one we are keeping only weighed 160g last night. She is eating seemingly well but today she is spending lots of time isolated and I can hear her kind of rasping (?) I have weighed her and she has out on 10g which I was pleased with but I am wondering whether she has respiratory problems. She has no sign of a runny nose or eyes.

Any ideas please? I would so hate to lose her :-(

Babies do have underdeveloped immune systems so I would get her checked out by the vet. Better safe than sorry.

If in any doubt, please see a vet as soon as you can. Babies can go downhill very quickly, as they have little body mass and not fully developed immune systems.

Hi again everyone! I was so pleased to hear the vet say how well mum and the 3 babies looked. She said mum looks "very very good in fact". However she said she didn't like the sound of the other baby's breathing. She said she wasn't dehydrated which is good and the fact that she is eating but the fact that she lost 5g overnight isn't good. She has prescribed antibiotics (Baytril) but said as she's so very little if they don't work we could try another antibiotic but there's not much more we can do. Please please therefore keep everything crossed as this is the baby my children picked out to keep.

Hi all me again! Hope you don't mind.... update - the baby is still eating well but I've not seen her drink ever! However she's not dehydrated and her weight has gone up from 165g on Tuesday to 180g. However she is still breathing more quickly than the others and making a noise when she breathes. She seems alert other than that. I've read some of the advice on another thread and wondered if steamed water would help or olbas? However she is tiny and only 3 weeks old today. Is there anything else I can give her? Would it be worth asking for another course of antibiotics when these run out? Sorry for all the questions but really want to give her the best chance.

Thank you x

New Piggie Owner Uri Advice Please

- place a bowl of steaming water close to the cage (but not so close that the hot steam can damage their tender respiratory system) and replace it from time to time to help ease the breathing. If you wish, you can add 1-2 drops of olbas oil. Vicks is not recommended; it contains substances that are noxious to guinea pigs.
