After reading The thread "Skinny Guinea Problems..."I had an idea. We would get all our guinea lovers from Egypt(people on here, friends etc) and then raise money for them to open a piggy rescue centre over there... Then I realised that sadly this would probably never happen....:(
I want to do something though... What could I do!?

That is such a sweet idea. I would love to help but have no money so am useless. I have been thinking about those poor animals all day and feeling so sad. :(

Maybe we should do something on here, like set up a group to help do fundraising to help

I was actually thinking something similar when reading the thread.

Except I was thinking of how I wished I could donate some proper piggy pellets over to her in Egypt but I imagined it wouldn't last long.

That's a good idea! But your right! I think we should set up a special group to do fundraising and then find a piggy rescue in Egypt(if we can!)and donate the money to them or we could find someone to set up a rescue for us in Egypt with our money.... But they Are both hard to achieve I think

I would be checking the export of food laws before going any further, there may be restrictions on what food stuffs can be imported into the country and from which country it is exported from.

For instance meat products are not allowed to be imported in the uk unless under strict licence to avoid the spread of foot and mouth. Certain seeds and plant life are not permitted in Australia (if you watch border patrol programmes), etc etc

I think the problem in Egypt has touched a chord in most of us. There is an organisation for animal welfare in Egypt. I have sent the info to the original poster. Perhaps the rest of us can help by contacting this organisation and getting advice on what and how to donate. I'm sure money is always welcome. You'd be surpised how much any western foreign currency buys in Egyptian pounds.

btw Pepperdog glad to know that Aussie program is on your tellies. You are right we have strict animal, plant and soil quarantine rules. I've had to declare papyrus from my trip to Egypt and wooden Maori carvings from New Zealand. Fortunately they all passed.

I have had my parcels raided by customs and all food items, even wooden toys taken out before, so now i always say please don't send any food stuff etc.. to my girls.

Well done Lilly good idea sending that info -c
and i think it's lovely how whispa5 started up this thread xx>>>

Haha, this is where my export regulations book come into use (my company sends large orders worldwide) and it says:

"Egypt only allows pet food imports that are certified to be free of ruminant material due to BSE concerns. Egypts importers are having difficult in obtaining US and UK suppliers that conform to this requirement"

I tried to get more information from the book but those things leave me cross-eyed. I do know that when we ship things to egypt, a certificate of origin is required in order to aid the receiver to get their items through customs without getting huge import charges.

So to send food would be hard but we could still raise money. Please tell people about this thread so we can get as many people as possible so we can all help raise money for animals that need it in Egypt.

I know its very sad to here about mistreated pigs in any country but I think it would be better to help the piggies in this country and once there are enough spaces in the rescue homes for all the needy pigs in this country then we can start helping the others. Unfortunately when people think that there is a place for unwanted animals they tend to take them on without finding out if they can actually care for them. It is the same with pet shops, if someone buys a pet from them it will be replaced with another one to sell whither the piggy which was sold was healthy or not. :( 8...

If any of the rescues see this thread maybe they could post a link to their site for donations, for anyone who wants to make a difference.

The place we want to help doesn't just rescue piggies but all animals and as we have had a person on here from Egypt saying how animals are treated there we all want to help.

Might be an opportunity for Australia and New Zealand!

Same sort of debate that rages in all western countries with foreign aid versus problems on their own soil. I'm sure most of us are approached by charities over famines in Africa and so on, including our American friends. Yet when I was in Manhattan New York for a few weeks some years ago I saw homeless people pouring out of shelters first thing in the morning and lining back up for entry in the evening. This in the midst of the most expensive real estate in the USA (at that time, don't know now).

No easy answer. Egypt is not the only non-western country that has these animal issues. And having spent 12 weeks travelling the length and breadth of Egypt I can tell you some of the people are no better off than these poor animals.

In the end it has to be the individual's choice on what help to offer where. I try my best to support some charities at home and some charities abroad.
