Hi I started with hay from wilko then upgraded to hay from natures own. Which overall I’ve been happy with. Unfortunately over the last 6 months my son has developed an allergy to our piggies which we have seen GP about but someone has suggested it may be the hay and not the pig!
so can anyone recommend where they get their hay from? I’ve checked the recommended places on here just Wondered if there were any other places reasonably priced. Thanks so much!

There’s hay box, timothy hay and hay & straw. The meadow hay I ordered a short while ago from hay box was beautiful! Very green and smelt lush. I ordered some from hay & straw which arrives today so don’t know what it’s like.

What hay were you using before? And is he having antihistamines?

thank you! I’ve checked out hay box but will have a look at the others. Hay box seemed a bit pricey for me at the moment.
I used wilko hay originally but thought I’d try a better quality one.
he is on a daily antihistamine which has helped though he still has itchy and streaming eyes When he’s held the piggies which is a shame as he adores them!

I feel his pain, I have hayfever that gives me itchy eyes and make me sneeze so much which is annoying with hay in the house 24/7 but I put up with it for my boys. It's not bad at all right now since it's winter but it's a pain in the summer! Such a shame your son can't hold the piggies :(

He’s still holding them 😀 GP wants to see how the antihistamine help so we’ve got to carry on - I’m just making sure he’s in a long sleeved top and position them on a blanket so it’s minimal contact! But he’s still having contact if you know what I mean

My partner has a hay allergy, we have found timothy hay is less of a problem than meadow.

I’ve never bought Timothy hay, do you just use Timothy or mix with meadow/ another hay?

Fingers crossed the antihistamine done the job!

Is the hay you buy dust extracted? If not it could be worth trying some that is. For me at least, the dust is the worst as it irritates my eyes and nose.

To start with I just used timothy, but have to admit we now mix in meadow. We've recently had a hay buying crisis and I'm just using what I could get. My partner has an allergy to touching the pigs and handling the hay so he does tend to avoid it if he can. In normal times he used to look after them a lot when I was away (only happened once in 2020!) . He would then only use the timothy, wear a mask when cleaning them out/handling the hay. Handle pigs and clean out cage and then have a bath and change all his clothes. As well as using anti histamines. Obviously all much easier for an adult than a child who wants to cuddle and help with his pets. I hope you can find a solution for your son.

Thank you! It does say it is, yes, but perhaps some places make a better job if it than others

I find timothy hay much more allergenic than meadow, there are some brands like Science Selective timothy that the piggies loved but I came out in a rash when I touched it, my eyes swelled shut, sneezing and wheezing!
Not had any issues with any haybox hays, and a cheaper nice meadow hay is Pillow Wad from Amazon- you can bulk buy like 3 x 3.75kg bags for maybe £25...

I use HayBox meadow hay which mine love.
I’ve just bought some standby supplies from Hay & Straw. The Ings tester pack was well received but I think the meadow hay is rather brown and stalky. However, the piggies will eat it so it’s useful to have on hand.
