Hi, finally found a cavy savy vet who has confirmed that Bubbles has a UTI (he had an xray today for bladder stones but thankfully it was clear) so he's got a course of antibiotics to take.

He's approx 3 1/2 yrs old (recently rehomed him so not 100% sure) and weighs 1.2kg.

He's on 0.7ml of Baytril (once a day) plus 0.4ml of metacam twice daily.

Just given him his first dose - with the help of OH - and I think most of it went it. just not sure if there is a specific order I should be doing this in, ie giving Baytril followed immediately by Metacam or should I space the Baytril and Metacam out?

I also have some probiotics to sprinkle on his veg, should I do this straight after the meds or later in the day, or does it not matter?

First time giving a GP meds and just want to try and get it right.

Thanks

Aw, poor Bubbles :(
I've given ab's followed by Metacam straight away, purely because my piggy was very poorly and I found it better for him (and my nerves) mallethead to administer in one go rather than twice etc. Probiotics were given a couple of hours later - Fibreplex is very good as it is a thick paste and can be given from your finger rather than a syringe.
What ab is Bubbles on, is it Septrin or Baytril (Baytril is very harsh and if you add a drop of Ribena, makes it more pleasant)
Monitor for eating too as it can diminish their appetite :(

Just spotted it's Baytril...

Is it dog metacam (1.5mg/ml) or cat metacam (0.5mg/ml)? Hopfully it;s the latter otherwsie 0.4ml twice a day is a bit high for dog product.

Other advice:
Weigh daily

Sandwich the drugs in between syringes of mushed pellets (not so harsh on the tummy that way)

Fibreplex, Avipro, Pro-fibre pellets are all good sources of probiotics but do not put in water bottle - mix in with syringe feed along with some extra Vit C (60mg/kg)

Monitor for poo and urine output - any change go back to the vet.

thanks for that, I gave them at the same time tonight as I thought it would be less traumatic for bubbles to get it all over in one go too.

I have the pets at home probiotic so just sprinkled it on his lettuce and he wolfed it down, I have heard that they can get upset tums on Baytril so will be keeping a close eye on him.

He does seem very perky at the moment so fingers crossed he stays that way....
