Hi everyone meet Barnaby 🥰.

He is hopefully going to be bonded with Branston when he’s a bit bigger and been through the quarantine period.

I got him from a breeder and I have documents and details of his grandparents! He came to me through a courier and was so well cared for. He’s absolutely gorgeous. And is already coming to the front at the sound of my voice and eating food from my hand. He is 11 weeks old.

The only issue I’m having is that he won’t eat pellets. His own mix wasn’t pellets and he just picks out the ‘good bits’ so I’m trying him on abit of Harrington’s and I also got burgess excel but at the moment there’s little interest. I’m not overly worried as he is eating hay fine but hopefully he will soon try some pellets.

Hello Barnaby! How old is he? I can’t see if his testicles have descended but if he’s under three months he needs bonding straight away.

All the best with it, hope they get on like a house on fire 😁

Hi yes he’s only 11 weeks. I always do a quarantine period so I wasn’t aware he needed bonding straight away?

The need for social interaction is more important in piggies under four months. If he happens to bring anything with him you will have to just deal with it. Size also doesn’t come into it when bonding. He won’t harm him. Have you double checked that he is indeed a boar? I would also book him an appointment to see the vet within a week.

Importance Of Quarantine

Okay thank you! I will bond him with Branston tomorrow. And yes he’s definitely a boy.

He really should be bonded today. You can always leave them in the bonding area overnight.

Hi they are in a c and c cage but with a grid separating at the moment as unfortunately I have had an awful day with my Piggie Coco.

She has a tumour on her side which has been heavily bleeding so she is only just back from the vets. She is on pain meds and antibiotics but I don’t think we have long 😢

I am so sorry to hear this news.
The best gift you can give Coco is as many happy today’s as you can.
Hopefully if she’s comfortable and content she will simply slip away peacefully.
This is what happened with Jemimah

Holding you in my heart

Barnaby is a very gorgeous looking chap and I hope the bonding goes well with Branston. If he isn't used to pellets maybe he doesn't even realise it's food. When he sees Branston eating them he may well try them for himself.

I'm so sorry to hear about Coco. Remember she doesn't know she is ill and will go on with her bimbly piggy life doing bimbly piggy stuff until she can't do it anymore. That's what happened to my Dennis and he just slipped away at home surrounded by love.

I really need a place to rant as I don’t know what to do anymore. Barnaby is terrified by Branston. To the point he is jumping at the c and c cage wall to get to me. He is completely happy when with me but when I leave the c and c cage grids open be freaks out and he even ran into the square grids to try escape. I have left the divide in as i am just too scared at the moment to leave them undivided. When the c and c is divided, he’s okay but he only stays on his side and doesn’t even go near him. It’s really odd. Like he doesn’t even rumble or communicate when Branston does.

I’m scared Coco is going to bite her wound and reopen it and I don’t think she will make it if she loses so much blood again. I stayed awake the entire night last night but I’m just shattered.

I’m so sorry! Perhaps first have a good sleep so you can decide what to do with a clear head. Did you put them in together when they came home? And so you know Barnaby’s background? How long were they together at the rescue and how was he behaving then? That’s really odd.

Hi so I’ve had Branston since he was 6 months old. He was bonded with Pickle but it was always rocky and two weeks ago they had a proper fight and Branston was scratched badly. (Due to being a skinny it looked really bad). They were separated and I am getting Pickle neutered as this is the second time he has fought with a boar.

Barnaby is from a breeder and is only 11 weeks old, he is in perfect condition and is super happy aside from the way he is acting with Branston. I put them side by side yesterday and attempted without a divider today.

Did you just remove the divider or put them on neutral ground? And did you separate yesterday because of how Barnaby was behaving? Would you consider just having them live side by side and trying to bond Barnaby with Pickle? Unfortunately you always need a plan b if you get a companion piggy from a shop or breeder. But you have to bond Barnaby with some pig, he’s too young to be alone.

Was he living with other piggies at the breeders?

Sorry you are having such a difficult time with your guinea pigs.

There are some great bondimg guides on here. Neutral ground is a must as they can get territorial and defensive of their space.

Best of luck with the bonding.

Hi so I bonded in a c and c cage I made up in my living room and then after no fighting I moved to their cage.

I have Pickle as on option instead of neutering but I want to try make it work with Branston as there hasn’t been any fighting or anything worrying. Barnaby is just scared bless him. Basically I have a 2x6 which i have separated down the middle so they each have a side. They can touch noses and I’m hoping to take the divider down again tomorrow and see how things go.

If you’re trying them again tomorrow then you need to bond them again on neutral ground. You can’t just remove the divider as they can then see it as invasion of their space. Was Barnaby with other piggies? I’ll tag @Wiebke

Hi!

Please always conduct bondings on ground that is not part of any piggy's territory. This can lead quickly lead to hostile reactions if it is perceived as an invasion.

Please take the time to read our very detailed practical bonding guide before you start bonding. The comprehensive guide covers the whole complex bonding process in detail with an eye on key social behaviours and dynamics for every single stage. It also covers the run up and the post-intro ca. 2 weeks dominance phase.
Bonding and Interaction: Illustrated social behaviours and bonding dynamics

All the best!
