meet my babies!

Aw poor little girly, glad it’s not a whopper like him then!
It could’ve closed up a little with the gunk in there etc. Bless her poor little thing, hope she’s a good girl for her meds! My boy certainly isn’t! 😈:))

she is actually! its hard to get it all in her mouth but i think she’s getting the majority of it!

this is the best photo i can get unfortunately!
A bit hard to see, but I know it’s difficult with a tiny wriggly pig! Looks like it’s scabbed over though, which you may have to pick off to let the gunk come out, know it’s not nice!
Could you maybe hold her like I’ve just done with my boy to get a better pic? if you look on the thread I’m pushing him up against a cushion to stop him flapping!

i will definitely try! see the vet didn’t mention anything about picking off scabs or anything!

It depends on what is going on with it but picking the scab off, ensuring it is kept open so you can flush any new pus out regularly is often the course of action to be taken. You don’t want pus being trapped inside.

here we are! i’ve patted it this morning with a salt and cooled water solution, will be doing this every time i give her antibiotics. expecting a vet call this afternoon, ill ask about the flushing and picking scab off, but because she hasn’t recommended it, i’d be too scared to do it yet!

very strange, there must be a reason why she didn’t say to do it!

Poor little lady with that horrible thing! I think it’s strange too, but to be honest it could be from lack of knowledge with piggies. As @Piggies&buns says, if the scab is left on then it’s keeping all the pus inside, this can cause problems like it getting infected etc.
I’d personally get the scab off and then the nastiness can escape!

shes an exotic vet though! i made sure to sign them up with someone who was trained and had experience with piggies, this is why i’m so confused! i’m so unsure with what to do😖

and i know bless her😢

so i was supposed to hear from the vet today before 3.. didn’t get a call. was in absolute tears, i really don’t know what to do, all i wanted was a bit of reassurance from her that i’m doing things right. even if i did decide to flush it i’ve got nothing to do it with and now being the weekend ill have to wait till monday to be able to speak to anyone. i tried to phone emergency vets for advice but they just wanted me to come in. i’m so lost and stressed out, i wish she’d just given me a call!😭

I’m so sorry she didn’t call, how frustrating for you
I’m thinking it may be best to just get the scab off and clean it, even if you can’t properly flush it etc, just so the pus can escape. But I’m not a health expert so I’ll tag @Piggies&buns and @Siikibam and see if they can help a bit too (thanks guys!).
Have you spoken to any more vets or been in since you posted? Hope you’re ok x

This is what I would be thinking - you don’t want pus trapped inside

thanks so much, i spoke to emergency vets who said they’d have to see her to advise what i should do. i’m okay just worried and hoping to hear back asap from my vet x

Well, you have to pretty much pick the scab off.
It all depends on what is going on underneath. The issue will be if it has closed with pus still inside.

oh my gosh that must be so painful for them😩 as will the abscess be! is there any way to tell if it needs this to be done? i have read that small ones may not need to be drained so i don’t know if this is why it wasn’t recommended? i’m definitely going to ask the vet when i can get hold of her.

You really need the vet to know how it is healing, obviously we aren’t but also cannot have hands on anyway

yes well hoping to maybe hear from them tomorrow! i’ve been cleaning it with cooled boiled water and salt for now, as soon as i hear back i’ll update you all. thanks so much for all you’re support, help and advice!

heya everyone just thought id give you a quick update! heard back from the vet yesterday who confirmed that flushing lunas abscess isn’t needed because of the type of abscess she has! most abscess, like many i’ve seen on here and online, leave a huge gaping hole that fills up with pus and therefore has to be flushed, however lunas isn’t like this, its a lot smaller and i think she called it a superficial abscess meaning it doesn’t need to be drained because its not filling up with pus, the swelling wasn’t the the pus filling up, it was tissue swelling! so essentially, pulling the scab off and flushing it out just wouldn’t be the thing to do! i’ve carried on with cleaning with a saline solution 2xs a day and she’s having her antibiotics twice a day, we’ve got a appointment friday at the vets for her to be checked over! will let you all know how it goes!
thanks everyone for your advice and help, i feel so much better after speaking to the vet that what i’m doing is correct☺️

Great news, I’ve been wondering how she is! Hope it’s all healed quickly and she can get some peace from the meds and cleans soon x

hi everyone! just thought id give you an update! we had a vets appointment yesterday to just make sure Lunas doing okay. well i can confirm the vet has said the abscess is gone and theres now only a little wound which i need to keep an eye on. shes been such a good girl with taking medicine and i’m so pleased it’s nearly healed.

my question is now shes off her antibiotics, can i just completely change them off the mix food + bran they are currently on (attached a picture under my text) to the blackcurrant burgess nuggets i’ve been trying to introduce slowly with no luck lol. the little monkeys just leave them in the bowls! we are starting to run low on the previous food that was given to us anyway so i need to do something soon!

If you’ve been introducing slowly so by now the burgess aren’t completely new to them then yes I would just stop giving the old food now
