This is my dedicated cataract group. Sadly Tegyd has recently died and Taffy's ageing process has speeded up noticeably in the wake of her best friends' death. Husboar Terfel is the 'baby' of the group at 4 years old while Taffy and Mali are 6 and 7 years old respectively.

Terfel (pronounced Tervel = "oak prince") is a very gentle, but timid boar. He is also a master diplomat, which he need with his feisty ladies! He is my cuddle piggy, but he also still loves to popcorn.

Taffy ("beloved") has had a horrible year being back-to-back pregnant for an estimated four pregnancies in the filthiest circumstances. She was part of a large rodent rescue from a backyard breeder. Sadly, Taffy developed congenital cataracts and lost her last rescue born daughter Telyn after two years, but she has found new happiness with her new dedicatd group and husboar.

Feisty Mali (pronounced Mahlee = Molly; previous name Nala) arrived two years ago and is still going strong, proving that rehoming an older piggy doesn't necessarily mean that you only have a short time with them!
Mali was handed back into rescue when her human parents weren't allowed to take her and her blind companion into sheltered accommodation. She failed to integrate with residential rescue herd after the death of her companion and after she herself developed cataracts and came here as an emergency because the rescue had already pledged spaces in an ongoing major rescue operation. It took all my experience and Terfel's superior diplomatic skills, but we eventually managed to fit her in and she has been a very happy girl since!

Just gorgeous  Lovely close ups of them all

They are all utterly gorgeous. I especially love Terfel's stripey face! How sad that they have cataracts. I have read that Aby's are particularly prone to them. Is this true?

Abys may be a bit more prone to congenital cataracts than other breeds, but all guinea pigs can get age related cataracts as get older. Taffy and her late daughter (the aby in my avatar) clearly had congenital cataracts which developed in their second year of life, but it also has to be said that they we rescued from a very bad background of indiscriminate inbreeding. Tegyd, a smooth, developed cataracts aged two and the others (Mali, Terfel, Tanni, Hywel and Ffraid, none of who is an aby) have old age cataracts tha have started coming on age 4 plus. Generally, congenital cataracts are still pretty rare, even in abyssinians!

Your stories are lovely and fascinating, Wiebke and the piggies are goRgeous!

I would love to have a large number of piggies so I could do my own "research" on guinea pig behaviour and bonding :) it's so fascinating. Rescue would be great! We don't have them in Finland..

Do you find that cataracts cause them any problems? When I lived in Canada we had a hamster who at 3 years of age got cloudy looking eyes. Took him to a vet who said it was old age cataracts & that hammy should only have lived to age 2. Well he lived happily to age 4 with those cataracts. Left him one evening running in his wheel & found him the next morning on his back in his forever sleep with all 4 paws up in the air.

Guinea pigs compensate with their other senses. It cramps their style a bit if the cataracts are so advanced that they can't run anymore, but otherwise they orient themselves by smell, touch (feet and whiskers) and by very acute hearing. My Mischief relearned to free roam the garden and was even able to turn herself back into her (walk-in) run over the distance of several yards of open lawn just through my voice, as long as I stood next to the entrance and kept telling her whether she was on course or not.

I have just posted this little video of Mali having zoomies on my facebook page; you can clearly see how she orients herself on her own scent spoor. She also uses other piggies' scent spoors on her adventures that have taken her across the hall into our downstairs toilet or as far as the kitchen:

I really enjoyed that video! Lovely to see her doing so well in her golden years. Really you would not know there was anything wrong with her.

What gorgeous piggies. I love the video and I must say terfel has that little something extra!
