Just wanted to get your thoughts on using megazorb as bedding for my pigs hutch as opposed to other types of bedding? what do you recommend?

Cheers,
Hannah

I used it before I went onto fleece and the only reason I changed was because it was getting dragged through the rest of the house. I thought it waas brilliant. No smell, really absorbant, the boys didn't eat it, hid mess really well and wasn't dusty at all! Still using it in their litter trays. Could quite easily have went over a week without completely changing it.

Thanks Shelley.

I am waiting for some to be delivered within the next couple of days, and am looking forward to trying it. I spot clean every day, and do a complete change every thursday and sunday (wether they need it or not because these are my only days off work!)

I did want to try them on fleece, but my only concerns were washing them...and I guess they'd need clean fleece every day (This isn't a problem, just concerned my washing machine wont handle the hair!)

Just used my first bag of Megazorb and I must say I am keen on it! Much cheaper than using shavings as well! :)) I get mine from a horse supply shop near us - buy changed from using shavings because Mario has ringworm and Gorgeous Guineas advised that the shavings were probably not the best thing to be using as it absorbs too much oil from piggies sensitive skin. I have fleece pigloos for them on top and fresh hay of course - but found the megazorb doesnt stick to the fleece as much as shavings did as well! rolleyes

I find megazorb more expensive than shavings, which is odd. I get a horse bale of dust extracted shavings which lasts months. I've already used half a bag of megazorb on three cleanouts. So I've resorted to mixing it in with shavings to get better absorbancy. I've noticed that it's prolonged the 'life' of the shavings by stopping it smelling so quickly and attracting flies.

I'll stick with pure megazorb for one of my rabbits that can't clean her back end, as it seems to work a lot better for her than the shavings. But it's not economical to do the same for my pigs. There's 24 square feet of floor space that needs covering each time, so I bulk it up with shavings to get the depth of cover. :)

I used megazorb for a while, but can't pick it up locally, and the P&P was making it expensive. Also, although it absorbed the bunny & piggy smells, it had an odour I wasn't too keen on (not everyone thinks it has a smell, but my nose is a bit sensitive LOL)

I changed to Aubiose which I can buy locally - it's also cheaper, I prefer the smell, and it's just as absorbent. The piggies and bunnies seem happy on it :)

I liked the megazorb and it was very absorbent. I only swapped to aubiose because it's cheaper/ in a bigger bag. :)

I bought my first ever bag of Megazorb (or "Zorbatron" as my hubby calls it!) this week, with the plan of trying it out it before my holiday in June (I thought it would make it easier for my parents to keep the cage clean while they were looking after the boys).

I use a layer of newspaper, then a thick-ish layer of Megazorb, then loads of hay.

I have to say that, so far, I'm well impressed by it! Non-smelly, very absorbant, kind to the piggies feet, easy to keep clean, and I reckon you could happily leave it more than a week before changing it.

Pud & Squeak were on Vetbed and fleece til I used the Megazorb, but I'm so taken with the Megazorb that I might ditch the vetbed and fleece for good!

Thanks for all the replies guys :)

My Megazorb arrived today (6.45am!) And I cleaned them out right away (excited piggiemumma!) Heres what I thought..

Smell- None! Hope i wasn't just lucky with this bag!
Dust- not as much as my shavings that I used to use, quite impressed
Softness- much softer than it looked in the bag. good for piggies baldie feeties :P

I used almost half a bag (more than I expected, but still not too bad if the piggies take to it) so should be able to get 2 whole cleans and spot clean for 2 weeks? on one bag.
When they were on shavings I spot cleaned everyday, and did a whole clean twice a week. But I'm hoping the megazorb wont need 2 whole cleans a week.. otherwise that will mean a bag a week (and at £11 a bag with postage, I wont want to be spending £44 a month on just bedding!)

Piggies opinions..
Heidi - "Megazorb is the best thing since sliced bread. I like to popcorn on it, and flop down on it. Its soft on my feeties. It doesn't taste very nice, I wont be trying to eat it again. I think it smells a little funny."

Bryan - "Megazorb is way better than shavings, they made me sneezy and my skin dry. I hope megazorb wont do this. I've had a lay down in it, and its pretty comfy. Its nice and soft, and I wont try and eat it like heidi, she said it tasted yuk.

Fingers crossed they carry on liking it,and I find it managable and not too expensive.

Oh my life... you post just switched a little light on in my head.. It didn't occur to me that I could use it for the hamsters aswell! Urgh, I'm such a doughnut sometimes mallethead!

Thank you! I'm off to clean my hammers out now, and introduce them into 'zorb too!

Just because I love them millions, thought I'd post some pictures of my babies on their new bedding.

I like megazorb and find that a little goes a long way. The absorbancy is just so much greater than shavings Ive found. I cant source it locally so the delivery is so expensive, however I'm going to order a bag now! my piggies do seem to like it as well....

If your wondering why there's only one picture with Bryan in, Its cause he's incredibly camera shy, and Heidi on the other hand, well you can see in the last picture that she loves herself a bit!

the only pictures I got of Bryan in focus were errr...welll

and a few more, identical ones!

We use Megazorb for our hamsters and it's great. They seem to love it too. Your piggies look like they are happy with their new bedding.

Thanks Helen, they do seem much happier. Megazorb is way better than shavings. Its even gotta cooler name! Have cleaned the hammers out with it, although they seem less excited! Will see how they like it when their awake properly tonight

I've used Megazorb for my piggies for over a year and am pleased with it, but I do think it smells worse than shavings - I love the smell of shavings :))

I did an experiment (fully scientific you understand rolleyes ) and put shaving, megazorb and fibrecycle (paper pellets) in separate bowls and added water by the tablespoon (I know I'm sad 8:)). But the results showed that the megazorb had 5 times more liquid before it even became wet to the touch, unlike the shavings (sopping) and the fibrecycle was good, but didn't absorb the wet as well to start with - important for Lord Bernie and his long locks.

I tried the hemp, but hated the touch of it and thought it a bit too sharp for my piggies feets.

I think it is more expensive in the long run, but I do a full clean twice a week probably throw away too much of the good stuff.
