Hi everyone,

As you may know poor Squirrel has URI, he's been prescribed Bisolvon and Doxycycline. The antibiotics is for 14 days and he's on day 7. He's still sniffly but the sneezing has reduced, and his appetite is consistent. He had a nosebleed on Thursday, so the vet brought over Meloxicam to help with any inflammation. He also had a nose swab done so we're waiting for the results. But the vet didn't specify how long we should use the Meloxicam for. Unfortunately the vets will be closed for the Christmas period so I can only call them on the 27th.

Shall I keep continuing the Meloxicam? Will it affect him if I keep continuing for the next 2 days until I call the vet?

Our other guinea pig Pea also started wiping his nose so we were told to give him Doxycycline for 14 days to be safe since they're in the same cage. We tried separating them but Squirrel started searching for him and sounded very sad :( Should I also give him Meloxicam? He doesn't sneeze like Squirrel does but occasionally wipes his nose (few times a day).

Thanks everyone, Merry Christmas! x

Oh here's the dosage.

Squirrel - 1516g (approx 1.5 years old)
0.08ml Doxy once daily
0.3ml Meloxicam once daily
Bisolvon a pinch daily (I sprinkle on lettuce and roll it into lettuce sushi and hand feed)

Pea - 1078g ( approx 10 months old)
0.05ml Doxy once daily
0.2ml Meloxicam once daily if needed
Bisolvon a pinch daily (I sprinkle on lettuce and roll it into lettuce sushi and hand feed)

Hi, the meloxicam doses mentioned sound quite low and are certainly safe to give piggies for the rest of the week without further veterinary advice. Is this dog or cat meloxicam? If it is the cat strength it sounds quite a low dose but of course this is something you should discuss with your vet before making any changes.
I dont think seperating your boys is a good idea because by the time symptoms appear both will have been exposed to the illness, and as you say seperating can be very upsetting for them.
Hope this is nothing too serious and they both make a quick recovery, and Merry Christmas to you and your piggies x

Hi PigglePuggle, it's dog meloxicam! Thank you so much, it's been so stressful for them and for me! I hope they make a swift recovery too 🙏

I shouldn’t think it will do any harm giving your piggies the meloxicam until you can phone the vet on the 27th.

Here is hoping for a swift recovery for both your boys x
