Hi Guys,

I've been reading up a fair bit today on fruits and veggies and how often I should feed my boys certain foods and I think it's fair to say that "Confused" is the word to describe how I'm feeling! LOL :{

This week we have brought:

Cucumber, Carrots, Cauliflower,Celery,Brocolli, Corn on the Cob, Cherry Tomatoes, Savoy Cabbage, Baby Gem Lettuce, Peppers(all Colours). We also have Banana's and Apples and have Basil and Parsley plants.

Out of these foods can somebody please tell me which we can give daily and which foods should be less often? :{

I currently give the boys a selection of a bout 3 veggies for breakfast and the same again for their evening meal. Is this ok?

Thank you! x

I wouldn't give banana too often.

I give mine a mix of five different veg/fruit twice daily.
If you give apple and carrot alternatively, and one sprig of parsley a day; the rest are OK every time. Just adjust the portions!

Thanks Vicky, we tried them on banana once last week, they didn't eat it so I probably won't bother with it to be honest, I just listed it as we have it in the house.

Thanks for your reply though, that really does help as all the websites and even the bloomin books just confuse me so much as they all contadict each other!

Thanks x

Always remember that tomato leaves are poisonous and should never be given to your guinea pig :)

I am sorry if the Ca-P Ratio info has confused you. The sooner my newer version in up in Reference, the better - it's a bit easier to follow for everybody!

It's mostly about variety and moderation. Be sensible about the amounts of each food you feed. Piggie diets are actually very flexible, much of it is learnt just by seeing what works for you and your guineas. What your pig likes, what you can afford, and simply trying to feed little bits of a variety of foods each day.

Thanks Pip, thats one bit of info that I had read and remembered but thank you!

CC4, don't be sorry I can see that your article has had an awful lot of effort and thought put into it and I thank you for that, it must have taken you ages to compile all the info.
Unfortunately, I'm just not that bright! lol! No, serioulsy- I'm just so nervous that I'll do something wrong with my boys, I need everything to be there in black and white, do's and don'ts. Does that make sense at all? I really do appreciate the effort you put into that article though!

I have only just found all this scientific stuff 3 years into guinea pig ownership! My boys get 1 or 2 types of veg daily, at teatime. Often it is peelings/stalks/leaves from what we're having (carrot peelings, cauliflower leaves and broccoli stalks are firm favourites). Otherwise it might be bagged salad, spinach or kale. The boys are perfectly healthy and have never had a days illness in their life so I must be doing OK with that system.

Fruit is only given once or twice a week, maybe half an apple or a few grapes or strawberries. They boys are already quite chubby and I don't think too much sugary stuff would be good for them!
