Doing some research and trying to get a vote on what people use most for their piggies, given mixed reviews on research, like to see a majority, ibuprofen or metacam use for mild inflammation and pain.
Thanks soo much

Aka wenton5 and chooch

I've never had Ibuprofen prescribed for a pig from the vet.

I have had Metacam many times and have used it long term on at least 4 occasions. I have a pig currently that has been prescribed it for long term. He doesn't have it daily but it will be used for the rest of his life.

So, a vote for Metacam from me.

I've never heard of ibuprofen being recommended for guinea pigs. Again I have had metacam prescribed on a long term basis and the only other alternative I have been offered was tramadol for if the metacam wasn't quite doing enough

No ibuprofen here; have never heard it prescribed by a vet and would never recommend it to others.

I have and have piggies on long term metacam use with no ill effects. If metacam is no longer strong enough, the safe alternative is tramadol for severe chronic pain.

Metacam here.We have had piggies on long term metacam at a higher dose and no issues.

Personaly I would not feel comfortable giving any of my pigs ibuprofen,
I only use metercam on vets recommendation "and" clearly defined pain indicators

Thank you all so I much, someone suggested carprofen. Its the long term use I'm concerned about.

So all that said, I am curious about what the dosage people are using for long term metacam for a guinea pig at 1020 grams, we see our exotics vet every 3 weeks, so we are in check.
Thanks soo much

Will check back on notes and see for you. What is it required for?

Now carprofen, that's not the same as ibuprofen. I have actually used that before for a piggy but I can't remember which pig.

It was a long long time ago when I used to use a non piggy savvy vet. I do remember that they didn't want to prescribe Metacam long term as they were worried about kidney damage so we were given carprofen.

But on Googling it just now it seems that both are fine to use with pigs that don't have kidney or liver damage.

I'll have a search to see if I can find out which pig it was.

Metacam.
So they have done research on ibprufen & piggies hearing. I wish trials on piggies & any other animal was stopped. A lot of countries have banned experiments on animals poor things must be in such pain. Goes to show how backward Britain still is

Please, can we just remember that legally the forum is not able to give advice on drugs or dosages. Only a qualified vet can do that after examination of the animal in question.

So I found my notes! It was for Arnold. He was prescribed Metacam long term after being diagnosed with arthritis but it caused a bad digestived issue. I've never had another pig who has reacted to Metacam and I've used Metacam many times.

So, because it was giving him bloat and soft poops we swapped to Rimadyl aka Carprofen. Carprieve was the brand we used 4mg per day.

When I moved the pigs were registered with a guinea savvy exotics vet and he was happy for Arnold to continue on the Carprofen. He took it for just over a year, until he died of other causes.

I was told at the time on a forum that Metacam was harder on the kidneys and Carprofen on the liver. But if a pig was healthy then it shouldn't be an issue. I have no idea of any research behind that claim and none of my vets mentioned anything about it though so it could be totally inaccurate.

Thank you everyone, ok, response. Here is his thread from December 13th, to explain.

Chooch 's Mysterious Health And Teeth
He sees a vet, who is considered one of the best exotics. I understand no one on the forum is a vet, I'm just requesting people's experience with doses that worked for them in the long term. Good to know that carprofen is rimadyl. I am in very close communication with our vet. The metacam is right now being used for inflammation, complicated eye and tooth problems to offer comfort. I don't like that it seems to zonc him out a bit. He has a long history of health and digestive issues, so I'm researching options given that this is long term. I really appreciate all the help. The update is that one eye may need to be removed, so I am scouring for thorough ideas. Thanks soo much, lara and Romeo Berthiaume
