Midge is on long term use of metacam due to an irritable bladder/sludge. She has 0.4ml (dog ) daily as well as 1/2 cap of nutracys +. She is just over 5ys and is slowing down. Now I know this is inevitable because of her age but I'm not sure if the metacam is playing its part in her reduced activity. Any information would be very much appreciated.

Metacam is usually given once a day, it has a 24 hour effect so splitting the dose wouldn't be helpful IMO

I've just read the information leaflet that comes with it and 2 of the rare side effects are lethargy and inappetence, Both of which Midge is suffering from. Again it might be just her age but I want to rule out anything that could be causing this. Ok furryfriends your expertise is now needed. She had 0.4 at about 10pm last night when can I give her the 0.2ml to start her on the split dose. Many thanks. Caroline x

I would wait until this evening, and then give 0.2 ml and then give 0.2 ml morning and night. xx

My Jerry has been on 0.32ml once a day for the past 18months - also because of bladder sludge. Because of his size he can go up to 0.4ml, but seems to manage ok on the slightly lower dose. I have never noticed any lethargy with him. For him the Metacam is really invaluable and he cannot be without it.

The side affects listed would refer to dogs, and would probably not affect piggies in the same way.

Hi Jerrybelly. It was just an idea. Midge has been with us since she was about 2mths old. She's also my daughter's remaining pig. She lost 2 within 6 wks of each other this year and I know she will be absolutely heartbroken when she goes. I think I'm clutching at straws as to find a reason as to why shes like this. Maybe I shouldn't look on the internet so much. :D. She is off to the vets on Wednesday for a check up.

I know exactly what you mean. It is such a worry.

Opiate based drugs tend to cause lethargy, but Metacam doesn't usually. Fingers firmly crossed for little midge x

Well Midge has been having her metacam in 2 doses since Sunday. Whether coincidence or that Midge was just under the weather her behavior and attitude has improved she's livelier and more like her old self. What ever it was I'm very pleased.

Don't want to hijack your thread but our Benny is on 0.35ml twice a day (dog metacam) - also for bladder sludge among other things! The vet put us on this for an initial period, which has been nearly a month with the aim to slowly bring it down.

Will 0.35ml be ok over this period of time or is it too much. This was a well respected exotic vet who prescribed it him, and I trust him but we came so close to losing him that we can't bare to think of it doing him any damage.

Pleased to hear Midge appears to have picked up too!

Sorry to hear Benny has been unwell :( Midge has been on this dose intermitantly for at least 6mths although over the past 2 1/2 mths she's had it almost daily at that dose. I was warned that it could cause liver problems over a long period of time but for Midge I had to take that chance. For her its been ok. Hopefully there will be a more experienced member along shortly to give you a more definite answer. xx
