Hi,

I checked Fifi over this morning and it looks like she had a swollen toe which had scabbed over.

I took her to the vet this afternoon, it turns out she might have knocked it on something, but nothing is broken.

The vet prescirbed me some metacam which is used for dogs.

I am supposed to give 0.3ml once daily for 5 days with the syringe provided. I'm finding it difficult to know how much to measure out. One of the nurses said to give below the 1 mark.

Could someone interpret the syringe to me as I'm very confused on where abouts 0.3ml is on this syringe. Unfortunately I don't have any suitable 1ml syringes.

Thanks.

I would recommend to get a 1 ml syringe from a pharmacy. Most vets thankfully provide one with the metacam. I would also recommend to split the dosage and give half of it twice daily to account for the faster metabolism.

You can double the amount per weight that a dog or cat is getting for the same reason. That is also why most vets prescribe dog metacam as you otherwise end up with a syringe full each time and an empty bottle very quickly!

If a regular 1 ml syringe won't fit the Metacam bottle nozzle (at least mine didn't), you can ask your vet to calculate how much 0.3 ml is on the kg scale of the syringe provided with the Metacam. I found it easier to use the syringe provided, as I could draw straight from the bottle. My vet calculated that my pig's 0.25 ml dose was 3.75 kg on that syringe, your vet should be able to do a similar calculation for you.

I usually remove the top of th bottle for easier access with a 1 ml syringe, but I have several arthritic older piggies that need it daily.

Oh, I actually didn't realize the top is removable! Good to know that this enables one to use a regular 1 ml syringe too :)
