My female guinea pig had an operation yesterday to remove a growth that had popped out of her bottom. She was due her first dose of metacam this eve. I noticed the box was metacam for dogs and in the past we’ve always had metacam for cats for any guinea pig who has been neutered. I phoned the vets to check it was correct and they were going to phone me back but didn’t. I’m worried about giving her the dose in case they’ve made a mistake. They had a very busy day yesterday with an operation having complications so I’m worried they’ve made a mistake. My piggy is doing so well with recovery I don’t want to kill her with the wrong medicine. Does anyone know the difference between the 2 types of metacam

Dog metacam is stronger than cat metacam - it is perfectly safe to give them dog metacam though.
We can’t give dosages etc (we aren’t vets so can’t) but I can say dog Metacam at the correct dosage for your piggies weight is fine to give.

Hi!

What metacam dose have you been prescribed? And what is the weight of your piggy? We can't help you any further on whether you have been prescribed a sensible dosage or not without knowing.

Please be aware that metacam dosages have gone up a lot in recent years because guinea pigs can deal with it a lot better than dogs or cats. They also have a much faster metabolism. In fact, dog strength metacam is a sign that your vet knows what they are doing; it is three times the strength of cat metacam.

It is important for the comfort of your piggy that you give metacam; it is not just a painkiller but also an anti-inflammatory that helps bringing any swelling down.

I agree that sounds fine, a good mid-range dosage that should be enough to help with any pain and inflammation but could be increased further on the vets advice if she seems in any pain still x

The dose is 0.2ml of 1.5mg/ml oral suspension for dogs once a day. She weighs just over 1kg

Hi!

The dosage is in the lower range for once daily and in the mid range if you give it twice daily.

Because of the fast metabolism, I would recommend to either split the dosage into half and give 0.1 ml every 12 hour. It is still in the low range of metacam but your piggy is not spending half a day being uncomfortable.
