Has anybody had any experiences with Metaclopramide? Positive or negative? My guinea pig has an intestinal blockage and a vet recommended we switch from Chlorpalm to this 0.2ml every 12hrs for 2 days. She's 6 years old and has only been to the vet once before in 2008 for some other stomach related problem I believe that she recovered from easily. Is this antibiotic safe to give for guinea pigs to help "stimulate the G.I."?

Metaclopromide isn't an antibiotic, it's a gastroprokinetic (gastro = stomach, pro = positive, kinetic = movement).

It's very effective and safe for use in guineas.

Does she have a blockage or does she have gut stasis where her digestion has stopped? Is she eating and pooing?

She made a pretty big clumpy poo like two days ago and she was also eating hay and grass two days ago. She doesn't seem to be eating or pooing anymore but she is still passing urine. She looks like she wants to try food she will go up to it but not eat it. When I put her back in her home after feeding she was nibbling on one of her cardboard houses.

Edit: Are there any negative effects with Metaclopramide? Things I should watch out for? I'm always paranoid about giving my guinea pig something I haven't used before as I don't want her to suffer some awful side effect which happened before when a vet administered a dosage slightly too high of something to disinfect a previous guinea pigs mouth several years ago.

Sorry for the shameless bump but does anyone else have any good experiences with Metoclopramide and were there any side effects? I realize this forum is based in the UK and me being in Canada might be a factor in the # of people online atm as it's 5:17 here currently.

Cant find the edit button. She started pooing actually a decent amount I'd say around 10-20 droppings some normal sized some small but still deformed. So she is passing poo and we will see how she does tomorrow. Would people still recommend Metoclopramide? She also ate quite a lot of lettuce and the back green part of the carrot which she always used to eat. There has been a noticeable improvement from yesterday considering she didn't want to touch any food at all and she passed no poos yesterday.

I've not noticed any side effects on my piggies who've had this. If she is pooing that is a good sign that her gut is working so it must be helping. I don't have experience of intestinal blockages, my boy was on metaclopromide and zantac for bloat where we had to syringe feed to help keep the gut moving. I don't think the same applies if it is a blockage though as you don't want to feed a piggy who has a blockage. If she is still going though, I'm wondering if there is necessarily a blockage? Hopefully someone more knowledgable will be along with advice. I hope she will be ok!

I've not used it with guinea pigs, but have had success in both chinchillas and degus with gastric stasis - it can be a life saver.

Its really good news that your guinea pig has started to eat and poop - hopefully things have started to move.
