I just got back from a weeks holiday to find the shed full of mice. There are droppings everywhere and they have been living with the guinea pigs. We set traps before we went because we knew we had a problem but now it is getting out of control. We keep food in sealed containers but they are climbing through the chicken wire and eating it out of the guinea pigs bowls. Also, I saw some really big droppings possibly from a rat. I don't want my neighbours to call pest control as the shed is against the fence to their garden and I think the mice have moved into their shed as well. What can I do to get rid of the mice?
 
I don't know that there's much you can do except trap (to kill) and poison.

My old piggies lived with mice and they never caused a problem. One pig did bite the tail off a mouse. . . Didn't put the mouse off!

Rats are more of a problem as they can and do kill guineapigs. Unfortunately, I think poison/ traps would be the best way to go

I am going out to buy more tommorw. I hate doing it but I have to to keep it under control. I found a mouse tail in their food bowl the other day so they must of chewed it off. I couldnt figure out how it got there. Thankyou

Please move your guinea pigs out of the shed asap! They can pick up illnesses from other rodents. Rats kill guinea pigs, if they don't die of fright first. Even mice can serious frighten guinea pigs.

Feed them only small portions of food several times a day (that goes for pellets and hay, too) in order to not attract any more rodents. Make sure that any provisions are locked totally away where no rodents can get at them.

To be honest, I don't think you may necessarily be able to get on top of a mice plague with just traps; it would be best to call in environmental control. I have witnessed a mice plague once in a holiday cottage in the Mediterranean. It was not a happy experience.

Thanks for your help. We moved the guinea pigs into hutches and finally all the mice have left. I haven't had any droppings for 2 weeks now which is good. They are now back in their run :)
