We have mice in our flat >:( when i got up at 4 this morning and looked in on the guineas i could hear one scuttling around somewhere but couldn't see it. They dont seem to have caused a problem so far - but could they give the guineas diseases or anything?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I had mice in my flat a few months ago too. I live in London and there is no getting away from them here, it's just a case of not encouraging them to choose your flat over the neighboors'.

I was told that they can pass on diseases to piggies but I was also worried about anything they could pass on to us (they pee everywhere on surfaces etc...).
Also be aware that there is never just one mouse, they live in groups and reproduce very quickly.

Are your guineas on the floor? Mine were and I found that I could not get rid of the mice as they were having a field day with all of the food and hay a their disposal. If I sat quietly with the lights off at night I could actually see them running in and out of the piggies cage for food!

In the end I ended up putting the cage on a table with smooth legs and away from the wall, that way they find it really hard to get up. I also used a trap (sorry this might upset some people but they had to go. I used an electric trap which is a lot less cruel than poison, glue or common traps) for a few weeks but to be honest taking the guineas off the floor did the trick. When they do not get access to food they soon go and set up camp somewhere else!

Good luck with it!
Laure

Not sure about the disease thing, but once I had a mouse that climbed up my old pig Maxs cage and got inside it and was trying to eat his food. Needless to say Max was not having it! Every time it came in he chased it out. It use to climb up the blanket I had on his cage too. It was sorta funny but he never became ill or anything like that.

I'm in Islington. Are you in London too?

Ah cool! I used to work in Victoria. I thought was the only one on here from London :D

For the last couple of winters we have had mice living in our garage. They were quite cute really and I didn't mind them too much (fact of life when you live on the edge of town next to fields!) I use to set humane traps, then put them in the piggies' carrying basket, and take them out into the country and release them - preferably next to some farm buildings to so the could set up a new home ;D 98)

My gps live in a large run in the garage with walls of 1 cm x 2cm wire netting. I used to think that was too small for the mice to get through until I saw them one night happily scuttling in and out without a care in the world! I have to admit I never thought about them passing on disease. They certainly never bothered the piggies.

I haven't seen or caught any for months, but am a little worried that may mean they have moved into the house - my husband found a dead one in the attic last year. Does anyone know how far these sonic alarms work? I know they would upset my gps, and the garage is attached to the house, but the house is quite large. Would I be able to use one in the attic, or the far side of the house without it affecting the gps?
