Hey guys! So I noticed some crust in Midnight's eyes and nose and I took him to the vet and she said his lungs sounded a little harsh and didn't want to risk a uri with him still trying to heal from surgery, so she out him on azithromycin. I know this is one of the best for uri's, but now he's not eating as well. I know he needs probiotics but the issue is that I can't get any. The pet stores around me do not have it and Amazon does but unless. Igor overnight shipping, it wouldnt be worth it. The vet suggested yogurt or yogurt drops, pineapple juice or drid mango, it just stopping the meds. I don't want to stop them. Does anybody else have any ideas?

Do you have another piggy - poo soup is an idea.. You make it by mushing a healthy piggys poop with water and syringing it to Midnight. I know it sounds gross but piggies love it!

Might be worth changing meds if they are upsetting him too,,, baytril and septrin are two others you could try.

Sending Midnight lots of vibes
x

Unfortunately I do not have another pig. The pig I tried to introduce to midnight passed away within a week, and midnight seems to be the kind of pig that's likes to be alone. He was on baytril for his surgery, is it safe to switch like that? He's eating lots of hay. If that's the case, does it mean his tummy is upset?

You need to discuss with your vet to see if the ABs he is currently on are making him worse. Azithromycin is called Zithromax in UK and is used for piggies but not routinely will tag in @furryfriends (TEAS) who may know more on side effects of it, she has used it lots for various illnesses.

Do not give yoghurt drops piggies shouldn't have dairy.

Probiotics won't fix issue with the ab's if they are upsetting him, what dose and how long has he been on? How is his breathing now?

I didn't think he should have yogurt! Basically my vet just said that if he's not eating at all, just drop them. He's on .05 mg once a day for ten days, this is the third day. I don't know about his breathing because I didn't hear if before, the vet did with a stethoscope, but his eyes and nose are cleared up. The vet said that ideally he should be on them at least 7 days in order to make sure all the bacteria is killed because if its not and I take him off them, he may become resistant. I'd love to know other side effects!

When I read the thread title, my first thought was a special course of antibiotics given at midnight. Haha!

I like it Shades :lol!:

Loss of appitite , tierdness , loss of balance , and probabaly a cople more

, but if you are anythink like me, the less you know the better , l would probabaly emagin them all :(

Zithromax did affect my Barney but thinking back I think there were other things doing on. My Tim was on it recently and did really well. Debbie will be the best person to advise as she has had lots of pigs on it over the years.

I've never found Zithromax to be a problem. In fact it's far better tolerated than other antibiotics. I think it's Important to remember that often it's the fact your pet is poorly (which is why they're on abs) that affects their appetite, rather than the medication. I currently have three piggies at TEAS taking it with great results and many more before them.

That's good to know. The reason I think it's the antibiotics that are causing him to not eat is because before he went on them he was eating fine. Is it possible his illness got worse while he was on the antibiotics because they hadn't kicked in yet?

It could be that. Is he eating any better now? x

How much does your piggy weigh and what dose are you giving? My vet prescribes at 1 ml per kilo. x
He weighs a little over 2 pounds and he's on .05ml once a day for ten days. He is eating better today! It doesn't look like he's had many of his pellets but he ate almost all of his hay and when I refilled it he immediately started eating more and he ate most of his lettuce. He also quite chipper today, playing with his toys.

Do you mean 0.5ml? His weight is about 900g so based on the dosing Debbie has mentioned it seems very low.

Glad he seems brighter.

Hey everyone, thanks for the advice! Midnight is doing much better now. I think TEAS was right in saying that he was probably not feeling well from his sickness. He's eating again! Hooray!
