Hi! I am fostering a couple of guinea pigs for the holidays for our local rescue. They gave me a Midwest cage and I am a bit worried about keeping the canvas bottom clean. Is there any way to keep it cleaner? I understand it is not the best size for two piggies, but we are only watching them through the New Year to help them out and that is what they had. I plan on making some fleece as I don't care for the loose fleece over towels.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I don't have any experience with midwest cages, but my first thought was that you could cut out a piece of cheap shower curtain (or a similar material) and line the very bottom with it. You'd have to make sure the piggies couldn't get to it though. The fleece that I use is larger than my c&c cage so I am able to tuck it down around the outside of the cage so the piggies can't get under it at all. So for example, you could do fleece, washable incontinence pad (or some other absorbent layer), then shower curtain. I think the bottom would stay squeaky clean.

Thank you! I may have some extra shower curtains around. After putting this thing together, I think I would prefer a C&C cage rather than this thing. But this is what they had available so I will make do.

In the past I have also used 'plastic' type table cloths to act as a waterproof base in a temporary cage.
If I ever see them on special (Christmas prints in January) I always snap them up as they are so useful.
We currently have one covering our outdoor bbq!
